This week is International Infection Prevention Week (October 18–24).

Infection prevention isn't one task — it runs through everything. Hand hygiene and PPE. Isolation precautions. Sterile technique. How equipment is handled. And how clearly a nurse explains wound care to a patient before discharge.

That last piece is the one people underestimate. What a patient understands walking out the door shapes what happens next.

Global Handwashing Day was October 15. In nursing it's more like every single shift.

Hand hygiene is one of the first skills students learn, one of the most frequently checked, and one of the highest-impact things a nurse does all day. Patient safety often comes down to the unglamorous things done correctly, every time.

In our skills lab, students practice hand hygiene, PPE sequencing, and infection control until it's automatic.

The people teaching you have done the work.

Meet Sheryllyn Gayle, BSN, RN, a member of our nursing faculty. She brings clinical experience into the classroom, helping students connect what they learn in theory to the decisions they’ll face while caring for patients.

When a student asks, “Okay, but what do you actually do when…?” Sheryllyn can draw on her experience to give them a practical answer. Her focus is on preparing students to enter clinical environments with confidence and provide patient-centered care.

World Mental Health Day was Saturday, October 10.

Nursing school is hard — long study nights, high-stakes exams, clinical days that ask a lot of you. Pretending otherwise does students no favors.

So we tell ours: ask for help before the breaking point. Build rest into the study plan on purpose. Treat your cohort as support, not a leaderboard. One difficult exam is a data point, not a verdict.

Emergency nurses work where the plan changes every fifteen minutes — triage, stabilize, reassess, and somewhere in there, explain to a frightened family what's happening. Practical nurses support that work across urgent care, hospital, and long-term care settings in Central Florida.

Here's what we tell prospective students: calm under pressure isn't something you either have or don't. It's built through repetition.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month — a good moment to recognize the role nurses play in it.

Practical nurses explain the screening reminder, take vitals before a nerve-wracking appointment, and answer the question a patient was too anxious to ask the doctor. Patients remember that.
