Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations at Red Rocks Community College are in full swing.

We've had a blast with dance lessons, salsa competitions and important guest speakers and it all kicked off last week with our Raíces de Colorado art exhibit opening. We had the pleasure of hosting the Mariachi band from Metropolitan State University of Denver, and partners including from Mi Casa Resource Center and Denver Police Department's Equity Diversity and Inclusion team.

Hispanic and Latino individuals strengthen our communities and this month reminds us to take time to celebrate that!

As Coloradans statewide celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, Red Rocks Community College (RRCC) is using those celebrations to promote emerging and established Latine artists through their latest exhibition.

Esai Ortegon was supposed to graduate from high school in 2015, but when his brother passed away he found it hard to stay in school and dropped out instead.

Now, more than a decade later, Esai is on his way to finishing that degree that he wasn’t able to complete then.

To open opportunities for people like Esai, Red Rocks Community College just started a new program that allows adults who didn't complete their high school diploma a new opportunity to do so.

A vaccine that would have cost her more than $600 anywhere else. Free. No insurance required. No social security number. That's what one community member found when she walked into the RRCC health clinic on a Saturday morning this summer.

From rehabilitation counselor to Vice President of Student Affairs — Dr. Lisa Fowler Fowler has spent her career finding ways to help more people.

She started working with people who are deaf and hard of hearing, moved into higher education and kept saying yes to opportunities that let her serve more students. A year after earning her PhD, she landed at Red Rocks Community College — and finally made it to Colorado, close to her sister and the mountains she'd been visiting for years.

"It just all fell into place," she said.

Today Dr. Fowler oversees all of RRCC's student support services — admissions, advising, student life, disability services and more. Her team is constantly adapting: remote advising appointments, extended service hours, focused work on adult learners and student engagement. And she'll be the first to tell you it's not enough yet.

"We still need to do more."

She also loves the campus. Foxes, elk, deer — and yes, a bear at graduation.

"I definitely believe RRCC is a special place."

But after she took a job in higher education, helping students from the same population get into college, she kept finding ways to help more students as she moved up to jobs with more responsibility.
