Happy Boss’s Day!!!

Today, we want to wish our Farm Manager, Jim Good, a very Happy Boss’s Day! We appreciate all the hard work, dedication, and leadership he brings to the farm. Without him, the MSU Dairy wouldn’t be where it is today!

Of course, we can’t forget to wish a Happy Boss’s Day to the real bosses of the farm 😜… our cows! They keep us on our toes, keep us moving to the beat of their own drum, and remind us every day who’s really in charge. After all, without them, we wouldn’t have a farm to run!

Here’s to the people (and cows!) who keep the MSU Dairy moo-ving!

We want to take a moment to give a few shoutouts from our corn harvest and those who made it possible.

A special thank you to Bio-Ag Solutions LLC for donating a large portion of the cost of the inoculant used for our corn silage, and to Connor Agriscience for donating a large portion of the cost of the plastic used to cover and seal our silage piles. Your generosity helped make this harvest a success!

Another big thank you goes out to Helders' Forage Storage for providing tires for us to purchase, as well as bagging the silage and haylage needed for our research projects. Finally, we want to thank Midwest Sidewalls for providing us a plastic roll stand to make covering the piles much easier as well.

Between our two corn silage piles, we ended up using over 6,000 tires to help secure the covers! It takes a tremendous amount of teamwork, resources, and support to get the job done, and we are incredibly grateful to all the businesses and individuals who helped make this year’s harvest possible.

Thank you for supporting the MSU Dairy and the teaching, research, and outreach that happen here every day! 💚

A little behind-the-scenes look at our ribbon-cutting and building dedication on October 8th! 💚

We couldn’t be more proud of how the day turned out and how bright the future looks for our new facility. It was exciting to celebrate this milestone and reflect on all the hard work, support, and dedication that brought us here.

A special thank-you to everyone who helped make this day possible, from the builders who brought this facility to life to the donors who helped make our vision a reality. We’re so grateful for everyone who has played a part in this journey and can’t wait to see what the future holds for the MSU Dairy!

The farm has been busy, busy, busy! 🌽

Last week, we officially wrapped up our corn silage harvest and got both of our piles covered. Between the two piles, we harvested close to 11,000 tons of corn silage! That’s a LOT of corn — and a whole lot of work that goes into getting it harvested, packed, and covered.

We want to give a huge THANK YOU to the employees from the Anaerobic Digester, University Farms, several researchers and faculty, and, of course, our own MSU Dairy employees who all pitched in to help get these massive piles covered. It truly took a team effort!

This was our first year experiencing the process of covering piles on this scale, so there were definitely some lessons learned along the way and things we’ll look to improve next year. But overall, we’re calling it a success! 💪

Four new cow sculptures have been installed at the MSU Dairy Cattle Teaching and Research Center, and they need names! A committee will review the entries and select the winning names. We were fortunate enough to be included at the MSU Agriculture and Food Industry Fair this week!

A big thank you to all the students who stopped by to learn more about the opportunities the farm has to offer. It was great getting the chance to meet so many students and share a little bit about what we do here at the MSU Dairy.

👀 I spy with my little eye… something new!! 👀

The Visitor Center finally got its finishing touches inside recently, and we’re excited to show off some of the new improvements! 🐄💚

We’ve added a few new things to help make the space more welcoming and give visitors a little glimpse into life here at the MSU Dairy.

Next time you’re visiting the farm, be sure to stop in, take a look around, and learn a little more about our cows and what we do here!

🐄 Cow #1654! 🐄

Meet one of the most experienced ladies in our herd! #1654 happens to be the oldest cow on the farm, celebrating her 11th birthday on September 17! 🎉

She came to us with the purchased herd late last summer and has already made quite an impression. She is currently in her 8th lactation, is 120 days confirmed pregnant with her 9th calf, and is 234 days in milk.

And despite all those years of experience, she’s still putting up some impressive numbers! She is currently averaging around 90 lbs. of milk per day, with a peak production that has ranged between 130–140 lbs. per day.

The only thing she’s missing, a name! Since she came to us with the purchased herd, she never came with a name. And no one has named her since coming to the farm.

We’re right in the middle of corn silage season here at the MSU Dairy! There are plenty of moving parts that go into harvest, from chopping and hauling to packing and covering the pile. It takes a lot of teamwork, long hours, and plenty of equipment to get the job done, but we’re making progress!

The weather hasn’t exactly been cooperating with us, but that’s farming! 🌦️ We’re working around the conditions and getting it done one way or another. One pile is nearly complete and ready to be covered to help preserve the feed.

Once the weather breaks, we’ll get the choppers and wagons moving again and keep at it until the job is done! 🚜🌽
