Today, the School of Energy Resources celebrates 20 years!
Over the past two decades, SER’s Academic Program has grown, evolved, and adapted alongside a changing energy landscape. From our first graduating class in December 2011 to this past May’s cohort, 196 students have completed their time at UW with one or more SER credential, strengthening their rĆ©sumĆ©s, expanding their skillsets, and preparing for careers across Wyoming, the region, and the nation.
While the program has taken many forms through the years, one thing has remained constant: a commitment to preparing the next generation of energy leaders. Through classroom learning, experiential opportunities, industry engagement, and professional development, SER students have gained the knowledge and experience needed to tackle the challenges and opportunities facing the energy industry.
As we celebrate this milestone, we also celebrate the students, alumni, faculty, staff, industry partners, and supporters who have helped shape the Academic Program into what it is today.
Twenty years down. The future of energy is just getting started.

ā€œWyoming is a small town with long streets.ā€
And yesterday, those streets were full of connection, conversation, and opportunity.Ā
The Rocky Mountain Professional Land and Resource Management Conference was a huge success.
From packed panels to real conversations with industry, ag leaders, land professionals, and policymakers, this wasn’t just a conference…it was students stepping into the room, making connections, and building their future careers in real time.
The values that define Wyoming—hard work, integrity, and showing up ready to make things happen—were on full display, and our students embodied every bit of it.
A massive thank you to everyone who made this possible—our speakers, sponsors, and attendees. You created an experience that students won’t forget.
And to the Student Chapter of Energy Resources (SCER)...you did it again with flying colors. You took the initiative, put in the long hours, and led this at a scale that is both admirable and impactful.
You didn’t just host a conference, you created a space where students lead, connect, and level up.
This is what student leadership looks like.

Meet Goose!

As you can probably tell, there’s no shortage of furry cuddles at the home of SER Associate Research Scientist and lecturer, Maddie Lewis. Goose is the self-proclaimed center of Maddie’s world and is best known for interrupting Zoom calls at precisely the wrong moment. An avid ā€œreader,ā€ Goose clearly shares her owner’s deep interest in judicial regulation—and she’s also a proud Wyoming Cowgirls fan. Go Pokes!

This wraps up our pet features for the semester! Voting for the winner begins TODAY, so check your UW email for a link to the ballot from the Academic Program to cast your vote for your favorite Pet of Energy this academic year. Voting will close next Friday, April 24th, and the winner will receive custom stickers and a treat/goddie box worth $50.

Four University of Wyoming students presenting Mowry Shale research funded by SER took home top awards at the American Association of Drilling Engineers (AADE) National Student Research Competition in Houston.
Paden, Abdallah, Tate, and Joe earned first and second place in both the graduate and undergraduate categories—an outstanding achievement and a major milestone for our students.
A special highlight: Tate, an Energy Resource Management minor and current Administrative Assistant for the Student Chapter of Energy Resources (SCER), earned first place in the undergraduate category for his project:
ā€œOptimizing KCl and CaClā‚‚ Barite-Weighted High-Performance Water-Based Mud for Cost-Effective Drilling in Clay-Rich Shales.ā€
This accomplishment reflects the hard work, late nights, and high-level research skills these students have developed. We’re incredibly proud to see them representing UW and SER on a national stage.

Meet Cooper!

Cooper is the pet of Mark Behrens, Program Manager for Technology Scale-Up at SER. This big, lovable Great Pyrenees truly comes alive when the weather turns cool—take him to a stream, lake, or river, and he’s going straight in. During the heat of summer, Cooper is like an uncompleted wellhead: still and inactive. But in winter? He’s a recompleted well next to an EOR injection site—energized, unstoppable, and ready to go.

Next up: the last of Maddie Lewis' furry companions to be featured in this year's Pets of Energy!

Meet Finn!

Another furry companion of Maddie Lewis, Finnegan—better known as Finn—is quite possibly the softest soul on earth. When he’s not busy winning over every stranger he meets, he can be found cuddled up with his well-loved (and well-torn) stuffed dog that he carries everywhere. When Maddie works from home, she affectionately refers to him as ā€œthe Finnternā€ā€”and he’s easily the most helpful guy in the office.

Stay tuned for the next two furry companions!

Meet Walnut!

Walnut is the pet of Jennifer Bell, Assistant Professor of Soil Science and Reclamation at SER. This growing furball is three months old in the first photo and eight months old in the second—and still getting bigger! A happy rescue from the Wind River Reservation, Walnut loves water, mountains, digging, and plenty of cuddles.

Stay tuned for the final three pets featured this semester!
