The future of food and agriculture depends on people. A recent report from Purdue University Center for Food and Agricultural Business highlights a growing demand for talent across the agriculture industry, with nearly 105,000 job openings expected annually through 2030. From agribusiness and finance to data analytics, communications, and supply chain management, the opportunities in agriculture continue to expand far beyond the farm.

As the industry evolves, students with leadership, business, technology, and problem-solving skills will play a critical role in shaping the future of agriculture. Our B.S. in Agricultural Business and M.S. in Agricultural Economics are helping prepare the next generation of professionals to meet that challenge.

Demand for agribusiness talent continues to outpace supply. New workforce projections reveal a structural gap that will shape hiring, education and leadership decisions through 2030.

Today we recognized the best of our students with the inaugural AGEC Leadership & Service Award. These students always volunteer and go above and beyond to represent the department. Recipients of this year’s award are:

Courtney Beene (Rupert, ID)
Kyla Pachner (Akron, CO)
Hadley Paisley (Wheatland, WY)
Clayton Rux (Crow Heart, WY)
Morgan Slover (Thermopolis, WY)
Stuart Trombley (Worland, WY)

When we began developing and implementing our vision for the AGEC Industry and Alumni Engagement Network, our vision focused on what we could provide to students. What we didn’t anticipate is what the students would end up providing to us! These students are not only the inaugural recipients of the award, they are the reason we created it. Our program wouldn’t be where it is today without their input and dedication to helping us make student experiences better. We appreciate each of them for leaving their mark on our department.

What a great opportunity for industry partners, CALSNR leadership, ASP team, and AGEC faculty to celebrate and recognize these students.

Last week, UW alumni, Sarah Kauer and Averi Davies represented the Wyoming Stock Growers Land Trust for their visit to the Beginning Farm and Ranch Management (AGEC 2020) and Economics of Range Resources (AGEC 4700) classes for an interactive lesson about conservation easements and how they relate to investment analysis and loans. At the end of the lecture, students worked through a case study to determine the advantages and disadvantages of conservation easements and they developed mission statements for a case study ranch. Our favorite mission statements were:

“Maintaining profitability while enhancing conservation and sustaining longevity of the operation.”
&
“Preserve our land, livestock, and legacy for future generations to come!”

Thank you, Sarah and Averi, for such a memorable visit!
