๐Ÿงฌ๐Ÿ† National Recognition for Groundbreaking Research!

UW Molecular Biologist & postdoctoral fellow, Owen Funk, working with Professors David Fay and Dan Levy, received the highly competitive National Institutes of Health (NIH) "Pathway to Independence" grant.

๐Ÿค  Funk is the first recipient of this award at UW, with fellow awardees representing Harvard University, Harvard Medical School, Princeton University, the Salk Institute, and Yale University.

Funk plans to study the microscopic roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans in order to understand cells with multiple nucleiโ€”
important research that translates into a better understanding of how to treat diseases such as muscle disorders or aggressive cancers, where cell fusion goes wrong.

๐ŸŒฟ At UW, Stewardship Starts With Discovery!

CALSNR Assistant Professors and research partners Sara Germain and Tucker Furniss are taking on a large-scale project to map and monitor forest health. Where did they start?โ€”Grand Teton National Park!

The goal is to establish baseline metrics for forest health and demographics, which will then serve as a basis for tracking changes over time.

โ€œThere arenโ€™t a lot of forests in Wyoming, so itโ€™s important that we understand how to keep the forests that we do have healthy,โ€ says Germain. โ€œBy studying in depth not only whatโ€™s killing them but [also] if theyโ€™re recovering and how quickly, weโ€™re hoping to keep that resource available for the public.โ€
