Dear Friend of Physics and Astronomy,
My name is Jinke Tang, and I’m the head of the UW Department of Physics and Astronomy.
I’m excited to tell you about the hard work of our students and faculty and the progress of the department. Students are deeply engaged in research for their experiential learning, and faculty are performing meaningful research and actively seeking federal grants. Two experimental condensed matter physicists—Dr. Alex Petrovic and Dr. Yu-Tsung “Rem” Tsai—joined us last year, and computational astrophysicist Dr. Meridith Joyce will join the faculty in August. The department has grown and is well-positioned for the future—for research and to serve students, faculty, research colleagues across the globe, and the general public.
Quantum computing is the future of technology, and we are actively contributing to its development and its impact on the state’s economy. Exciting news—we received a National Science Foundation grant to expand quantum information science and engineering at UW. This project is led by Professor Jifa Tian with contributions by a number of faculty. Even though this investment is getting us started, we need private support to take our programs to the next level. We are also currently developing a major NSF Regional Innovation Engines proposal to advance quantum technology and infrastructure in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. The overarching goal is to develop and sustain an economic ecosystem in our region by promoting use-inspired research, technology transfer, and most importantly workforce development.
I’m writing to ask you for your support of the Department of Physics and Astronomy. I cannot overstate how important your support can be to students from towns small and large. Programs like cutting-edge research into quantum computing can spark student interest, inspire them moving forward, and may keep them here in Wyoming after graduation. The Department of Physics and Astronomy needs your help in creating this spark.
Go Pokes!

Jinke Tang,
P.S. Thank you for your continued support to UW—every penny is worth it.
