Dr. Michael Brown, COJO Emeritus Professor, was given the Distinguished Service Award at the 56th annual convention of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia (AHSGR) in Hays, Kansas. When Brown retired in 2017, he joined AHSGR, an international historical and genealogical society, to learn more about his own heritage. His grandfather was part of a German population that lived in Russia since the mid-1700s and migrated to Wyoming in the early 1900s. Brown served nine years on the Board of Directors, edited its journal for four years, and wrote several articles. He has spoken at Society conventions including as keynote speaker, and expanded international connections, particularly in Kazakhstan. The Distinguished Service Award is given “in recognition of the exceptional and meritorious service which Michael has given to the Society.” Congratulation to Dr. Mike Brown!

Last week, we brought COJO together for a BBQ at Washington Park to welcome our new graduate students!

Faculty members and graduate students brought their families together for an afternoon of good food, fun conversation, and getting to know one another outside the classroom. It was a fun way to welcome our newest members and start the new academic year together. 🥳
