University of Wyoming Professional Writing Minor

University of Wyoming Professional Writing Minor This is the official page for the Professional Writing Minor at the University of Wyoming. What is Professional Writing?

The Professional Writing Minor at UW is an amazing opportunity for all students to gain the professional skills needed for future employment. "Professional writing," generally speaking, refers to the kinds of communication that working professionals—in any field—use in order to participate in the activities that their respective professions value. Professional writing differentiates a how-to manua

l from a fashion magazine, a travel brochure from a budget report, and a resume from a page. It is the ability to know your purpose, your audience, and your desired outcome for a piece of writing—and change your writing style accordingly. This means that it is not just for English majors or people who like writing—professional writing skills are necessary for all future professionals, no matter the field. The professional writing minor requires 18 credit hours. For more information about the program or to set up an advising appointment about the Professional Writing Minor, contact Michael Knievel at [email protected].

I like to picture that today on Election Day, Drew Davies will stroll into the Farnam Street office of the firm that he founded, Oxide Design, past the cool Lego display in his storefront window and feel good about making that Douglas County ballot — and ballots across the country — a little bit bet...

Meant to mention this in December, but the end of the semester crushed me--congratulations to Brittany Mohler and Mark Lawson, who graduated in December with degrees in Theater and Dance and Microbiology, respectively. If you worked with or took classes alongside either of these folks, you know them to be excellent students and wonderful people. Congratulations and good luck!

Just a quick note to PW minors-- I know that some classes for next spring are filled. Still some space in 4000, if you are at a point in your program when it makes sense to take it. Email me if you want to chat about it!

Just a quick note about a truly remarkable alum (UW PWM, 2011)-- Jacklynn Pham finished her MDes in Communication Planning and Information Design at Carnegie Mellon University. From finishing her grad program, to interning at Google, to consulting and teaching, Jacklynn has made quite a mark since leaving Laramie.

As a quick follow-up to the last note, I should mention that 2014-2015 found us conferring our first Professional Writing Minor Student of the Year Award. The winner? Lora Waeckerle. Lora majored in political science, was recognized as one of the A&S Top 20 students during Spring 2015, and is off to the University of Nebraska for law school. Congrats, Lora, on your distinguished career at UW, and all of us associated with the PWM wish you the best as you move on to this next phase of your education.

This is a long time coming, seeing how we are moving toward the beginning of the Fall 2015 semester. But! We want to congratulate our PWM grads from this past spring-- Lora Waeckerle, Mary Bargdill, Laura Bueter, Sierra Merrill, Kelsey Gittings, Monica Lavin, and Sapphire Feltner. What a great group! And, our largest graduating class yet. Thanks to all of you for all of your great work, and we wish you the best going forward!
