Saint Vincent Honors Program

Saint Vincent Honors Program The Saint Vincent Honors Program brings together students from across the college who share a vigorous commitment to intellectual life.

The backbone of the program is the set of Honors courses that enable such students to pursue a liberal education characterized by intense conversation and work with dedicated professors. We are also seeking to form a broader intellectual community, where the ideas that students explore in the classroom take on a life of their own in the lives of our students. Honors students have the opportunity t

o participate in special extracurricular activities, including evening discussions and cultural excursions. They also interact with faculty outside the classroom, providing for support and mentoring throughout (and sometimes beyond) their time at Saint Vincent. We hope to develop and expand these opportunities in the coming years and are excited about the talented group of students we serve.

The SVC Honors Program took a trip to the Andy Warhol Museum last weekend to learn about Warhol’s experience as a second generation Austria-Hungary immigrant in Pittsburgh from the 1920s to the early 50s.

By seeing artifacts from Julia, Warhol’s mother, students were able to imagine his youth and see the influence of his family on his artistic works.

For a more hands-on approach, students experimented with screen printing, a printing technique which uses permeable mesh and a blocking stencil to create designs with ink. Warhol is credited with popularizing screen printing as an artistic technique in the 1960s, his most famous work being the iconic “Marilyn Diptych” in 1962, pictured below.

The Saint Vincent College English Department would like to wish senior Sarah Malone a special congratulations on her acceptance to Colombia University's MFA program. Sarah, an English and Engineering double major, will be pursuing an MFA in writing this fall. She spoke highly of the English faculty's assistance during the application process:

"The encouragement provided by Professor Gil-Montero and Dr. McDaniel was completely integral to the whole process, and very much appreciated. They helped me in finding programs, they put me in contact with SVC alums who had been at the programs I was looking into, answered my endless stream of questions about applications, and dealt with my nerve-wrecked self while I waited for admissions decisions. The whole world of graduate school was something completely foreign to me this time last year, so I think it is safe to say that the knowledge and expertise provided through my wonderful, compassionate and caring mentors has done a world of good."
