What does it mean to leave a legacy?

I think about that question often in my work with leaders. Through Onyx Leadership, I’ve come to see legacy as more than what we accomplish. It lives in the people we encourage, the doors we open, and what continues to grow because we showed up for others.

Ms. June Byrd-Brown is a living example. Her care for young Black men at Calvert Hall has shaped lives and educational journeys over the years. The June Byrd-Brown Legacy Grant honors that impact by providing support to students following in their footsteps. Our goal is to reach $100,000 so the grant can become endowed and serve students for generations to come.

Yesterday, our community came together for the Second Annual Ravens Watch Party in support of the grant. Nearly 70 people registered. We celebrated a Ravens victory, caught up with classmates we hadn’t seen in years, and, best of all, welcomed Ms. Brown herself.

Looking around the room, I was reminded that legacy is also something we build together. Every person who came, gave, or helped make the gathering possible became part of carrying Ms. Brown’s care forward.

Thank you for showing up for her and for the young men who will benefit from this grant.
