Congratulations to our very own Dr. John Gluckman, who officially received his University Teaching Award from Chancellor Girod at a ceremony yesterday evening!

Dr. Gluckman won this year's Ned Fleming Trust Award for Excellence in Teaching, for excellence as an instructor on several grounds: innovation, dedication, quality of intellectual content, depth and breadth of student understanding, and reflective consideration and development.

In celebration of Indigenous People's Day, please join us for a virtual poetry reading and conversation with two renowned Maya Kaqchikel Ajtz'ib' (artists) from Chi Xot, Iximulew (Comalapa, Guatemala): Negma Coy and Noé Roquel. This will be a trilingual event in Kaqchikel, Spanish, and English, with translation by Ingrid Sub Cuc. Come join us for the next presentation in our linguistics colloquy series, as we welcome Eli Cochrane. Eli is a KU undergraduate, triple-majoring in psychology, data science, and political science, with a research program intersecting computational linguistics, group identity, and sociopolitical cognition. He is also a 2026 University Scholar, a Portz Interdisciplinary Fellow, and a founder and co-president of the Kansas Research Collective, a peer-to-peer support group for undergrad research.

Eli will be presenting a workshop on computational text analysis, a key component of his research. This presentation will take place Thursday Sept 24 at 4 pm in Stauffer-Flint 100.

Earlier this month, three of our linguists presented at the Lavender Languages 32 Conference hosted by the University of Edinburgh. M.A. student Lillianna Lamagna presented a project launch talk titled "Analyzing Anti-Trans Legislation in the US." PhD student Bayleigh Baldwin presented a project launch talk titled "Quantifying 'Chill' Affect: The Case of Bisexual Stoners." Finally, assistant professor Dr. Phil Duncan presented "God made trans people: Resisting trans disbelonging through religio-political rhetoric." Thursday, KU Linguistics hosts its annual Oread Lecture, inviting a distinguished scholar of the graduate students' choosing to come present. This year's speaker is Dr. Dan Parker, from The Ohio State University. His talk asks what we can learn about sentence processing from LLMs.

The Oread Lecture is open to the public and will take place Thursday Sept 10 at 4pm, in Stauffer-Flint 100, followed by some light refreshments.

KU Linguistics hosted its first-ever in-town pop-up event earlier this summer: Language Exploration at the Library. This event featured seven exhibits showcasing just how much language happens around us right here in Lawrence, KS.

We couldn't have done it without the Sociolinguistics Lab and the Developmental Psychology Lab. Thanks to them, and to our hosts at the Lawrence Public Library.

More than that, our event got a write-up at LingComm, a blog run by Dr Gretchen McCulloch about communicating linguistics to the wider world.
