A $2 million NSF grant to a KU-led initiative will expand educational opportunities for low-income students pursuing careers in STEM.

The National Science Foundation's Scholarship in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S-STEM) has awarded $2 million to a KU-led initiative that will expand educational opportunities for low-income students pursuing careers in computing, engineering, and emerging technology fields. This funding will provide scholarships, mentoring, interdisciplinary coursework, and career development opportunities while helping prepare a new generation of STEM professionals capable of responsibly developing and stewarding artificial intelligence and autonomous systems. I2S' Jennifer Lohoefener is leading the project in collaboration with fellow faculty members Perry Alexander and John Symons, as well as KU professor James Basham (Department of Special Education) and Emily First at Rutgers University-New Brunswick.
