“This summer, in addition to conducting research for my MA thesis, I attended two student conferences. The first conference was held at Seoul National University in South Korea at their Kyujanggak Summer Workshop. This was a two-week program that selected graduate students from all over the world to participate in lectures conducted in both Korean and English. This program was incredibly beneficial to me because I got to learn about the general state of Korean studies in Korean academia. Coincidentally, while I was in Korea for the conference, I was able to conduct some field work related to my thesis and see a contemporary version of the theatre genre my work centers on, yǒsǒng gukgǔk. This was an unforgettable experience, not only because it is relevant to my research, but also because this genre had almost been forgotten until recently.

The second conference I attended was based in the United States across three cities, San Francisco, New Orleans, and Washington DC. I was a delegate in the Korea-America Student Conference (KASC). This conference is student lead by delegates from the previous year and brings together 10 Korean students and 10 American students for academic and cultural activities, culminating in group presentations at the end of the conference. A highlight from this conference was being selected to present a five minute flash talk at a forum with Silicon Valley AI Nexus. My topic centered on preserving human agency when using generative AI to manufacture cultural products.

This year, my focus is on finishing my thesis so I can graduate in May 2027. I will be presenting a chapter of my thesis at the Pacific Graduate Conference in Korean Studies at the University of Southern California in October of this year. In conjunction with my research, I will be the instructor for the online course “Happiness in East Asia” (EALC 303) and the president of the Graduate Scholars in East Asian Studies (GSEAS). I am excited to be involved in my KU community both with the EALC department and with CEAS. I am looking forward to a very eventful year!”

Ayako Mizumura, CEAS Assistant Director, traveled to Dodge City Community College to present a traditional Japanese tea ceremony.
Students and staff explored the history and cultural practices of the ceremony. They also enjoyed freshly prepared matcha tea paired with her delicious, homemade strawberry mochi!
