Dr. Terry Pertuit (Graduate Education, Leadership and Counseling) recently presented two sessions at the 2026 North Atlantic Region Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (NARACES) Conference in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Her conference presentations highlighted innovative uses of artificial intelligence in counselor education and school counseling:

“Teaching with AI Across the CACREP Core: Practice, Application, and Ethical Guardrails” — an interactive session focused on using AI-supported role-play and prompt design to expand opportunities for student practice, application, reflection, and feedback while maintaining clear pedagogical and ethical guardrails.

“From Data to Direct Services: Mapping AI Across ASCA and MTSS in School Counseling Programs” — a poster presentation exploring how AI-related technologies can support school counseling practice across data use, early-warning systems, documentation, and direct student services.

Terry’s work emphasizes a central principle: AI can expand opportunities for practice and learning, while relational teaching, professional judgment, and the counselor–client relationship remain at the heart of counselor preparation.

We'd like to highlight another one of our longtime adjunct faculty members who has done so much for our students and school partnerships over the years. Please see the message below from Professor Dianne Gallo!

Hello, Broncs!

My name is Dianne Gallo, and I’m an adjunct professor in the Department of Teacher Education and the Department of Graduate Education, Leadership, and Counseling at Rider University.

Over the past four decades, I’ve dedicated my career to public school education in various capacities. As a classroom teacher, counselor, and administrator in the West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional School District, I helped foster a partnership between the district and Rider University. This collaboration provided Rider students with invaluable hands-on experiences in a public school setting with talented classroom teachers.

As an adjunct professor, I’m thrilled to share my extensive experience and passion for education with Rider students. What truly excites me is working with passionate, intelligent, dedicated students who are eager to make a positive impact on the lives of their future students. By preparing and equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge, I’m confident that they’ll be well-prepared to thrive in their own classrooms and make a difference
in the world.

Wishing you all a wonderful Fall Semester!

Continuing our focus on some of the wonderful adjunct faculty in our education programs, today we put a spotlight on Jeff Grabell!

Jeff is a graduate of Rider University, having decided to change careers in his forties and coming to Rider to become an elementary school teacher through our Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification program. Jeff became a third-grade teacher in the West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional School District, where he continued his relationship with Rider by repeatedly opening his classroom to our teacher education students during their practicum field experiences. Jeff loved being a teacher, and he further loved giving back to the profession by helping to prepare the next generation of teachers.

Now, Jeff is in a new stage of his career as he works as an Adjunct Professor in our School of Education. Jeff teaches future elementary school teachers how to teach science in the Methods of Teaching Science in Elementary Classrooms course. Jeff truly believes that science instruction can be the best part of an elementary student’s day, and he shares that passion with his Rider students who, in turn, bring that excitement and passion with them into the field.

Jeff credits Rider for giving him the excellent mix of practical and theoretical knowledge he needed to become a successful teacher, and gives praise to the program for the strong relationships our teacher preparation programs and field placement office have built with our local schools. He notes that Rider education students are curious, dedicated, and excited about the prospect of becoming teachers, and he considers himself fortunate to be working with them on their journey in his newer role as an adjunct professor.

We are very grateful to Jeff for the decades-long relationship we have had with him as a student, as a fieldwork partner, and now as an adjunct professor. Thank you, Jeff! We hope to continue working with you for years to come!

In addition to our wonderful full-time faculty, we are also very fortunate to have the support of several amazing adjunct faculty members who teach a variety of critical academic courses, and some who support our students during their field experiences and internships. Over the next few weeks, we will highlight some of these individuals.

We start with Vanessa Bernal, who is teaching several courses in our CACREP accredited School Counseling graduate program.

She writes:

Hello, Broncs!

My name is Vanessa Bernal, and I’m an adjunct professor in the Department of Graduate Education, Leadership, & Counseling at Rider. It’s a full circle experience to now teach at a university that was once such an important part of my own journey.

I’ve spent the past 15 years in education in a variety of roles—from early childhood and elementary education, to counseling middle school students in public education, and preparing the next generation of school counselors and mental health professionals. I began my own educational journey at Middlesex College before transferring to Rider for my B.A. I later earned my MS.Ed. in Educational School Counseling & Leadership, with a focus in K–12 School Counseling, from Monmouth University.

What I love most about teaching is being part of a student’s journey before they step into the field themselves. If I can help my students become not only knowledgeable and skilled professionals, but also compassionate, thoughtful leaders who find meaning and purpose in the work they do, that is incredibly meaningful. I believe that by shaping the professionals they become, we are also contributing to a more compassionate and supportive society.

This semester, I’m excited to welcome new graduate students, support practicum students I’ve had the privilege of teaching in previous courses, and bring NJ school and mental health professionals into the classroom to share their real world experiences and perspectives to prepare them for the field.

Happy Fall Semester, Broncs!

We'd like to congratulate D'Andre Wright, a Secondary Education and English Literature student here at Rider, who has received a sponsorship to attend the upcoming Black Men in Education Convening (BMEC) conference this November!

D'Andre is completing a fellowship with the Future Teachers of Excellence, in partnership with the Center for Black Educator Development (CBED). The upcoming conference provides an excellent opportunity for current and future educators, particularly Black male educators, to network, gain professional development, and to hear from keynote speakers.

D'Andre shares, “As the Black Men in Education Convening (BMEC) approaches, I look forward to learning new strategies and approaches that I can integrate into my teaching as a future Black male educator, particularly in enhancing the support provided to all students. Given that this is my final year, I am thrilled to connect and network with current Black educators, administrators, and other professionals.”

We hope you enjoy the conference, D'Andre!

The new school year is underway, and our Rider University student teachers are out in their schools and classrooms!

Pictured here is Annaleise Grimm, an Elementary Education major who is student teaching in a kindergarten classroom this fall in the Hopewell Valley Regional School District. Here she was greeting new students and families on the first day of school, last week. Then, last night, she participated in the school's Back to School Night!

Welcome back, Broncs! The Fall 2026 semester is underway, and we are so glad you are here! Welcome to our new Broncs as well!

This past summer, the former College of Education and Human Services merged with the former College of Arts and Sciences to form the new College of Humanities, Sciences and Education (CHSE).

The renamed School of Education and Human Services (SEHS) is housed within the larger CHSE--but what we do and what we provide has not changed. The Department of Teacher Education (DOTE) is still in Bierenbaum Fisher Hall, Suite 102. The Department of Graduate Education, Leadership and Counseling (GELC) is still in Bierenbaum Fisher Hall, Suite 202. The Office of Field Placement and State Certification remains in Bierenbaum Fisher Hall, Suite 116.

What has moved is the Dean's Office. Please find the new Dean's Office in Lynch Adler Hall, Suite 100. Please also note the new Dean's Office email address: [email protected].

We look forward to seeing you on campus! Go Broncs!
