(10)

Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI) is recognized internationally as a premier summer training program for aspiring young musicians and is the only program of its kind associated with one of the world’s great symphony orchestras. Under the guidance of distinguished professionals, and in the presence of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO), students are immersed in an atmosphere of extraordinary music making fueled by high artistic standards, rigorous programming, and a rich legacy of learning and performance. The moment you step onto the grounds, you join a community that empowers students to be artists. No one who spends a summer at Tanglewood leaves untouched by the experience.

2020 Avery Fisher Prize · Lincoln Center at Home

Congratulations to #myBUTI alum, Anthony McGill (BUTI'95), who won this year's Avery Fisher Prize! This news came with an additional exciting announcement for one of our partners, The Juilliard School's Music Advancement Program (MAP). In lieu of a large in-person celebration, McGill was invited to designate an organization to receive an additional gift of $30,000. So he and Weston Sprott, dean of Juilliard Prep, have started an endowment fund dedicated to enabling MAP students to attend summer programs and festivals. “We’re trying to ensure openness and opportunity for all kids, regardless of background, race, religion, sexual orientation,” McGill said in an interview.

Meet Dylan Goodman (BUTI’19,’20), a percussionist from Westport, Connecticut! Dylan currently studies classical percussion at Manhattan School of Music’s Pre-College, where she is the principal percussionist of the Philharmonic Orchestra and a member of the Percussion ensemble. She also attends the High School Jazz Academy at Jazz at Lincoln Center for jazz drum set. Dylan attend the Percussion Workshop in 2019 and was planning to attend again this summer. 🥁
.
.
.
Dylan spent seven consecutive summers before BUTI at a conventional overnight camp and was eager to immerse herself in a specialized conservatory setting surrounded by music daily. She explains, “I heard amazing things about BUTI from my friends and professors, and knew attending BUTI would provide me with the extraordinary opportunity to study alongside some of the most talented musicians in the world.” Dylan knew she wanted to pursue a college degree in music with the intention of making it her career, and BUTI was the perfect environment to help her grow. 🤩
.
.
.
“My favorite part of BUTI was the people. I met and worked with so many talented musicians, made many new friends during the program, and even had an incredible amount of fun in the process. Together, with my peers, we formed a tight bond of both friendship and musicianship while going through the program,” Dylan explains. She recalls how her roommate, who played the Euphonium, taught her so much about the Euphonium and helped her grow as a percussionist. Dylan goes on to say, “The collaboration between each musician within the program is the critical component which makes BUTI so beneficial and special.” 🧍🧍‍♂️🧍‍♀️
.
.
.
Dylan describes how BUTI helped her confirm her desire to pursue a degree and career in music and exposed her to the magic of collaborating with amazing musicians through learning about musicianship, technique, new composers, and much more. She says, “I was exposed to people who love the same things that I do and the environment allowed for us all to learn from each other and create lifelong friendships in the process.” 🎼
.
.
.
Advice to the BUTI Class of 2020 – “Keep working hard! As a musician, we are constantly on the move and learning new repertoire for upcoming concerts, auditions and performances. The current environment we are all living in is time for us. We finally have a pause, a long moment to work on our technique, a piece we’ve always aspired to learn, or even just to stop and take a deep breath. If we all keep working hard and stay focused, when we are able to be back together, the music will be better than ever.” ✨
.
.
.
To future BUTI students, Dylan says, “Don’t give up! If you are lucky enough to have the opportunity to attend BUTI, make the most out of every moment of the program because it goes by quickly and there is so much to learn. You get to work alongside musicians from the BSO and meet musical peers from all over, so cherish every moment.” 🎶

When did Sarah Vautour, soprano (BUTI'11) decide that she wanted to become an opera singer? When she attended BUTI!

In an interview with Opera Wire earlier this year, she discussed how much the program meant to her. “I remember being in the Berkshires in 11th grade, sitting in the grass, at the Shed, feeling more awake and impassioned than I had ever felt in my short, teenage life. From that moment on, I knew there was no turning back. I had to do this for the rest of my life.”
