Welcome to KINE 1105 Indoor Cycling class.
The SPC Course Catalog says this one-credit-hour class is designed to “improve strength and cardiovascular fitness.”
Last week, while cycling students spun, sometimes at top speed, news photography (COMM 1316) students were there with cameras to see how well they could capture motion.
Photography students had to adjust their shutter speeds to capture spinning feet in two ways: frozen and blurred.
To capture the blur correctly, photographers had to make sure only feet (and not bikes) were blurred.
And in general, students learned the longer a camera’s shutter stays open, the more blur there is.
At the same time, the blurred photos usually turned out fairly bright because there’s more time for light to enter the camera.
Photos that show frozen action require a camera shutter to open and close very quickly, often in a fraction of a second.
Students found these photos turned out to be slightly darker overall when compared to blurred action photos.
Jolie Perry, a student photographer, said she used a 1/8 shutter speed to capture the blur compared to 1/1250 shutter speed to freeze the motion.
