South Plains College alumna Kensey Barrett is making a difference in rural healthcare, both in West Texas and on the national stage.

A graduate of SPC’s first Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) cohort, Barrett spent 12 years serving patients before returning to her hometown of Levelland as an adjunct professor in the very program that launched her career.

In March, Barrett traveled to Washington, D.C., to advocate for healthcare education funding and bring attention to the growing need for healthcare professionals in rural communities.

Now, she’s helping prepare the next generation of physical therapist assistants while continuing her mission to serve the communities she calls home.

“I’ve been grateful to SPC because in the moments when my life was changing, SPC was there,” Barrett said. “I’m proud to say that I’m a South Plains College Texan.”

Meet Watson, one of South Plains College’s most unique residents!🐢

Watson is an African spurred tortoise who has called SPC home since 2012. Donated by SPC Board of Regents member Jim Mara, Watson arrived about the size of a dinner plate and originally lived in an enclosure built by Professor David Etheredge in one of our biology labs.

As Watson grew, so did his need for space! Eventually, he became strong enough to pull himself up on the sides of his enclosure and peek over the top. 👀 That’s when it became clear he was ready for a bigger home.

Watson moved outdoors to the Biology garden, where a larger, more permanent habitat was created for him. Today, his space includes a shallow pond where he can soak and stay hydrated, along with his own tortoise house and appropriate heat sources to keep him comfortable during cooler weather.

Watson is cared for daily by Biology faculty and student workers. His diet consists primarily of hay, supplemented with fresh greens, edible flowers and other occasional treats.

And Watson is going to be part of the SPC family for quite a while! African spurred tortoises can live well beyond 100 years, so his home has been designed with his long future in mind. 💙🐢

Beyond being a familiar face in the Biology Department, Watson gives SPC students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with animal husbandry, reptile biology and the responsibility that comes with caring for a long-lived exotic species.

And Watson isn’t the only animal that calls SPC home! From reptiles and fish to chickens and other critters, our Biology Department cares for a variety of animals that give students even more opportunities to learn beyond the classroom. 🐟🐔🦎

From the classrooms of South Plains College to a Level I trauma center, Bret Jett is putting her SPC education to work when it matters most. 🩺💙

A Fall 2022 graduate of SPC’s Associate Degree Nursing program, Jett now serves as a trauma charge nurse at an Intermountain Health hospital in Utah’s Salt Lake Valley. She credits SPC with giving her the hands-on experience, confidence and resilience to lead her team and care for patients facing critical medical situations.

“SPC was so engaging and so friendly, it really encouraged me to put myself out there,” Jett said. “It changed my experience overall, and it shaped me into the nurse I am today.”
