Special shout-out to Logan Hill '27, who has been doing ongoing research with Prof. Vanessa Massaro as part of the Bucknell Prison Data Collective as well as research with the Place Studies Program's Place-Based Partnership Collaborative this summer. His poster, "A Guide to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections Intake Process" was recognized with an award at the annual Susquehanna Valley Undergraduate Research Symposium this week.

We are excited to be part of this initiative working with such dedicated partners in local collaborations for revitalization!

There is a layer of Bucknell connection underlying this Coalition. Two Bucknell alums - Jacob Hannah '17 and Josiah Hannah '17 who now work with Coalfield Development - approached us a year ago about building a coalition of organizations to launch a revitalization through workforce development initiative in Mount Carmel, where they learned about community building through their applied classroom experiences in Management and Geography classes facilitated through the Coal Region Field Station. After a year of connections and conversations, the pilot is launching with a Coalition of 9 partner organizations - and invitation for more to join.

Today, the Bucknell Ecology Center hosted 17 educators from 7 area school districts, CSIU, and DEP's Environmental Justice Office for a professional development workshop on Teaching Air Quality: Data, Public Health, and Environmental Justice. Participants attended sessions led by members of our Buckell air quality research team - Dr. Doug Collins - Associate Professor of Chemistry, Dr. Dabrina Dutcher - Associate Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, and Dr. Shaunna Barnhart - Place Studies Program Director at the Ecology Center. This work builds on our on-going air quality research and outreach in the Lower Anthracite Coal Region, which includes a team of 6 student researchers this summer.

Teachers are developing lesson plans for students in Grades 6-12 to ask and answer their own questions on air quality - including using air quality sensor equipment - that aligns with PA STEELS education standards.

This workshop and year-long program is made possible by a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection's Environmental Education Grant Program. Additional funding and support for this program is provided by Partners for Rural Impact and the Bucknell Ecology Center.

We are so proud of Mason, and while we’ve already celebrated his graduation, we just have to highlight the incredible path he took here! Even as a psychology major, Bucknell’s liberal arts approach gave him the freedom to explore completely different passions. The Ecology Center (through the Watershed Sciences & Engineering Program) served as a great interdisciplinary resource, allowing Mason to broaden his academic horizons through hands-on environmental research. His dedication even won him The H. W. Wieder Prize for Susquehanna River Research!

Mason is now considering a different direction for his master’s degree, based on his experience with the Watershed Sciences & Engineering Program during the spring and summer of 2025. We can't wait to see what Mason will do with his future!

Mason Klotz '26 partners with Ecology Center experts to reimagine Limestone Run as a healthier ecosystem and community asset.
