They find it's a way to make a difference in the community, learn important lessons, an

d explore community issues that are important to them. Not only does civic engagement help others, it helps students develop leadership skills as educated citizens and make connections between classroom learning and real-world experience. Students interested in nonprofit work can also explore career options. Bucknell students can volunteer on an individual basis or with a group of friends, join one of our community service organizations, or become active through academic classes, clubs and organizations, sports teams, or fraternities and sororities. Participating in community service and service-learning is a great way to give back to the community, share your talents with others, and learn valuable skills for life beyond college.

Meet Favour, one of our Community Impact Interns hired by our Center for Summer (2026)!

This summer, Favour will spend eight weeks working with the Union-Snyder Food Hub, addressing a serious problem, food insecurity.  Her efforts will support key community programs that help support this issue.

The 2024 SUN Hunger Mapping Report (covering Snyder, Union and Northumberland Counties) found that, on average, 1 in 8 residents in the region experience food insecurity. Additionally, Feeding America has identified a more than 40% increase in food insecurity across Pennsylvania over the past two years.  If you’re interested in volunteering with the Union-Snyder CAA’s Food Hub programs, visit bucknell.givepulse.com and search the ‘Opportunities’ link for CAA Food Programs () listed to find available volunteer shifts”.  To learn more about the Food Hub and Hunger Coalition regional programs, go to: https://www.union-snydercaa.org/foodhub

Cloey Rentschler ’27, a neuroscience major, is in her first year volunteering with Girls on the Run Mid-State PA () as part of their Milton School District team. Throughout the season, she has built meaningful connections and created lasting memories in her role as a coach. She is especially excited to see the girls reach their goals at the end-of-season 5K on the morning of April 25 at the Lewisburg YMCA.

Cloey shares, “I highly encourage students to run or volunteer at GOTR 5K events at the Lewisburg Y—you really get to witness the positive impact this program has on young girls in our community. Opportunities include cheering participants on, helping with registration, or even serving as a running buddy.” To learn more about the April 25th event, visit: https://www.gotrmidstatepa.org/5k-lewisburg .

Additional information about volunteer opportunities with GOTR Mid-State PA for the upcoming academic year can be found at: https://www.gotrmidstatepa.org/volunteer.

This academic year, Cloey has also served as an intern with the Center for Community Engaged Leadership, Learning and Research, where she has helped facilitate workshops on various community engagement topics.

Thank you, Cloey, for your dedication to supporting a local youth development program, and making a difference in the community!

We have been busy cooking meals for our Community Harvest meal distribution program. In March, we had a cooking team from St. John's United Church of Christ and a cooking team from Saint Paul's at the Farm. They made chicken corn soup, mac & cheese, chili con carne, BBQ chicken, and beef/spinach/noodle casserole! Thank you to our partners for all your hard work cooking for our community!
