Bucknell's first engineering program was established in 1893 and presently consists of six engineering departments: Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. The more than 600 students in these departments are taught by over 60 highly qualified faculty members. Bucknell is a predominantly
undergraduate institution, and the faculty are dedicated to outstanding instruction and close student-faculty interaction both within and outside of the classroom. The faculty are also scholars, often internationally known in their fields of expertise, and typically offer a variety of research opportunities to our students either during the summer or during the regular academic year. Engineering education at Bucknell emphasizes an understanding of the fundamental principles of engineering, mathematics, and the natural and social sciences, and the ability to develop creative solutions to complex, open-ended, and multi-faceted problems with careful consideration of the impact of the solutions on the environment and society. The very strong analytical and problem solving skills developed by our engineering students serves them well upon graduation in careers both in engineering and in a wide range of other occupations such as finance, law, technical sales, medicine, and a variety of entrepreneurial endeavors. The College of Engineering offers four-year Bachelor of Science degrees in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, and in Chemical, Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering. Master of Science degrees are offered in Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Environmental, and Mechanical Engineering. In addition, the Department of Computer Science offers both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Computer Science degrees in the College of Arts and Sciences. Five-year, dual-degree opportunities are available to students interested in combining a degree in one of the engineering disciplines with a degree in a wide variety of departments in the College of Arts and Sciences, including a five-year program leading to combined Bachelor of Science in engineering and Bachelor of Management for Engineers degrees. A strong connection between the College of Engineering and the College of Arts and Sciences is a hallmark of study at Bucknell. Students in engineering are required to take a range of courses in the College of Arts and Sciences, including English, mathematics, physics, chemistry, as well as courses to fulfill social sciences, humanities, and global and societal perspectives. Many students also elect to complete one of the many minors offered across the university, such as in East Asian Studies, Mathematics, Theatre, Biomedical Engineering, German, English, and many others areas. Bucknell's College of Engineering offers truly outstanding and exciting engineering educational opportunities in the supportive environment of a small, residential university. Students also enjoy many curricular and co-curricular offerings in areas such as club, intramural, and Division I sports, writing for the Bucknellian, participating in Bucknell's Institute for Leadership in Technology and Management, pursuing service learning with the Bucknell Brigade in Nicaragua, playing in the pep band, becoming a residential or orientation assistant, studying abroad, participating in Bucknell Student Government, doing research with a professor, starting your own business, or founding a club or organization that you define and create from your own ideas, among many, many others.
