In partnership with Bucknell Center for Sustainability and the Environment, Environmental Studies students have worked over the past 3 years to document and advance one of the pioneer institutions of sustainable, organic agriculture in the United States -- Walnut Acres Project, right in our backyard in Penns Creek, PA

Happy Earth Day Everyone! We are excited about this year’s Lewisburg PSA Earth Week Program! The PSA worked with three Bucknell University Environmental Studies & Sciences seniors who have developed and are running a week of supplementary environmental education programs at Kelly Elementary School. Each Kelly student has received a packet of learning materials from the Bucknell team, which include lessons following each day’s environmental theme, activities such as art projects, backyard/park nature exploration, online educational info, and science experiments that parents and caregivers can do with kids at home. (We have been posting some of the links to these activities on the Lewisburg PSA Earth Week page the last few days, so scroll through and check them out! Also, you can find all of the digital versions of the material packets on the FB page, organized by grade, in the “Groups” tab).

Each day this Earth Week, the Bucknell students have been holding live zoom sessions with each class at Kelly, leading the kids in discussions and activities related to each day’s environmental theme. On Friday, the Bucknell students will finish the planting of a pollinator garden they have been developing in the Kelly courtyard, and we will send the kids home with packets of milkweed seeds for parents/caregivers to plant with them! This year's Earth Week theme is Restore Our Earth. We hope through many of these activities to encourage curiosity in kids about the planet, communicate the possibilities and importance of learning outside, and promote ways of working together towards a healthier, shared future.

Check out what three Environmental Studies & Sciences students - - Sarah Croteau, Chris Mangano, and Clay Myers - are doing in their ENST411 Environmental Community Projects class, in partnership with Lewisburg PSA (Parent School Association)! The Bucknell team has created this week of supplementary educational materials for each elementary school grade K-3, sent home with the kids in a packet of worksheets and backyard projects. The Bucknell students are zooming into each class once this week to run lessons full of information, experiments, and fun! Then on Friday we will plant a pollinator native plant garden in the courtyard of the elementary school and will send the kids home with milkweed seeds to plant with their families. Andrew Stuhl

From ENST graduate Dominic Scicchitano, a great blog piece for the Environmental Law Institute, "No Trespassing: The U.S. Environmental Movement's Long History of Exclusion". What Dominic said about writing this:

"Like society at large, the U.S. environmental movement has been designed by and for the benefit of straight, white men. I wrote this blog at ELI as a brief look into the movement’s exclusionary history with regard to gender, race, and sexuality, and how this has shaped American environmentalism today. Though I initially wanted to share this during Pride month, I think current events (https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2020/07/22/liberal-progressive-racist-sierra-club-faces-its-white-supremacist-history/) make now as good a time as any.

Here's to working toward a more inclusive mainstream environmentalism 🌲🌊💚"

Check out the work Environmental Studies & Sciences affiliated faculty member Jeff Trop did with community group Merrill W. Linn Conservancy!

DALE'S RIDGE TRAIL ON THE ROCKS
Take some quiet time this July 4th weekend, visit Dale's Ridge Trail, and see what's "new' here. We've added an educational dimension to the trail experience with the placement of 5 limestone boulders located near the trailhead. The 420 million-year-old boulders and the fossils embedded in them tell the geological and biological history of our area. Thanks to Bucknell geologist and Conservancy president Jeff Trop for selecting the boulders and to New Enterprise Stone and Lime, Winfield for donating and transporting them.

Black Lives Matter

To our Black students, alumni, and friends: We value you and all that you bring to our community and the world. We believe in you and are ready to support you. We say this explicitly in protest of the steady stream of anti-Black violence upon which the United States and much of the world is built; a violence that manifests as everything from subtle but painful offenses in everyday conversation to cruel murders and threats of murder at the hands of the state and white vigilantes, which are tragically common occurrences that those who enjoy white privilege have been resistant to acknowledge and end.

To all of our students, alumni, and friends: we, as Bucknell Environmental Studies and Sciences faculty, encourage you to challenge white supremacy with the same passion with which you approach environmental issues. Use the knowledge and skills you gain from our courses and research to challenge racism in every space you can, whether that be protesting in the streets, demanding that local leaders do more, reading to learn more about systemic racism, discussing racism with friends, family, and strangers, or calling out your professors and university when they need to do better.

For resources, go to: https://www.shutdownstem.com/

Today, we participate in to do the hard work we must do to ensure that Environmental Studies and Sciences lives up to our responsibility to dismantle racism. We look forward to communicating our plans for short and long term changes soon.

In solidarity,

Bucknell Environmental Studies and Sciences Faculty

Meet Anna Karnes! Environmental Studies graduating senior

We promised we would post profiles of the Environmental Studies & Sciences seniors. We want you to know these great people and to link up with them if you have any work or graduate school advice or connections. Thanks for supporting our seniors!
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Anna Karnes is a graduating candidate for a Bachelor of Arts degree in Environmental Studies and Philosophy with a minor in Classics & Ancient Mediterranean Studies. Her experiences both in and beyond Bucknell have instilled in her a passion for environmental conservation, animal rights, and an ethical approach to how humans interact with and manage the habitats around us.

Anna will be entering a 6 month agricultural position upon graduation working for a non-profit in Cincinnati, Ohio where she will be assisting with and learning from the agriculture, greenhouse, garden, and environmental education teams of the Greenacres Foundation. Next year, she hopes to find a longer term position that allows her to continue living out her motto to “do good"!

Outside of class, Anna spends her free time training her horse, Koda, in eventing. She also enjoys playing with her two cats, staying active boxing, and bottle-raising orphaned kittens - and more recently wild bunnies!

Normally at this point in the semester, we post all sorts of photos of our graduating seniors presenting their team work from ENST411 Environmental Community Projects. In this course, they partner with community organizations to do lots of cool work in our area. But in this most unusual semester, our Environmental Studies & Sciences majors had to adjust these hands-on projects in big ways. I've been so impressed with what they managed to do. Here's a photo of all the seniors in a zoom class with me (clearly I am not of the Instagram generation, ahem). I'll be posting some images from their work in the weeks to come, and will be posting stories about seniors who are looking for jobs and connections. They'd love your help in their job and graduate school searches!

Check out what our Environmental Studies and Sciences majors are doing in the spring 2020 senior culminating course, ENST411 Environmental Community Projects! Tatum Contreras, Camryn Goldstein, and Tierney Beauregard partnered with the Lewisburg Parent Student Association (PSA) to create this week of supplementary education materials to mark the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. The students planned to lead lessons in person at Kelly and Linntown, but with the Covid-19 cancellation of school, they amazingly shifted gears and turned their materials into online, accessible resources. Check out (and like!) their FB page where they will post links to videos, crafts, and experiments for each day's themes.

Links will become available Monday!
