Bucknell English: Creative Writing, Film/Media, Literary Studies

Bucknell English: Creative Writing, Film/Media, Literary Studies From Beowulf to Toni Morrison, and eco-poetry to Hitchock films, texts and images we read and shape help us find wisdom, communicate, and initiate change.

Students study a broad range of topics in literature and culture including:

Caribbean and Irish literature
literary theory
African American literature
gay and lesbian literature
gender studies
film studies
science and literature
children's literature. Students in English classes learn to express themselves critically and creatively, developing a sensitivity to lang

uage and precision in writing and speech as well as analytical skills that will serve them well in their other university courses and in their professional lives following their education at Bucknell. English majors learn valuable analytical and communication skills through reading of complex literary texts, class discussion, frequent writing assignments, and oral presentations. Students contribute to literary magazines as well as poetry and fiction readings. Majors in English find themselves well prepared for graduate school in English and creative writing, for teaching, for law school and other professional schools, and for careers in publishing, management, advertising, and other professions requiring creativity, careful attention to language and critical thinking.

Thank you so much to alums Barbara Bell '18 and Kyra DeVoe '23, who came to campus last week to talk to current English students about what they are doing now, and how studying English at Bucknell helped them get there.

Barbara, who majored in Literary Studies, Political Science and Spanish, is an account director at Anomaly, an advertising agency based in New York City, where she has managed brands such as the NBA, Jose Cuervo, and Fossil. Kyra, who majored in International Relations and minored in Creative Writing, works as an assistant publicist at HarperCollins Publishing.

Barbara and Kyra talked about the critical and creative thinking skills that they learned in their English classes as well as how important learning to write well has been to their careers. It is wonderful to see our alums are doing great things and to know that we helped prepare them for post-Bucknell success!

Thank you to English faculty member Joe Scapellato for organizing the event, and the Center for Career Advancement for helping us bring Barbara and Kyra back to campus.
