During the 2026 West Virginia Economic Development Council’s Annual Fall Conference, set for Sept. 16-18 at Snowshoe Mountain Resort, WVSOM will highlight its efforts to develop the Greenbrier Valley Bio Hub and promote WVSOM, the Greenbrier Valley and West Virginia as destinations for biomedical development and innovation.

At 9:30 a.m., Sept. 17, WVSOM President James W. Nemitz, Ph.D., will join Bryan Brown, executive director of the Bioscience Association of West Virginia, and Don Smith, WVSOM’s chief communications officer, to present “WVSOM: Making the Greenbrier Valley Bio Hub a Reality.”

With the Greenbrier Valley Economic Development Corporation as the regional coordinator, the conference will bring together leaders from across West Virginia to explore opportunities for economic growth, workforce development, innovation and collaboration.

Congratulations to Dewayne Duncan, a WVSOM Board of Governors member, on his presidential appointment as deputy assistant secretary in the Office of Career, Technical and Adult Education at the U.S. Department of Education.

Duncan has served on WVSOM’s Board of Governors since his appointment by West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey in September 2025. A lifelong West Virginian, Duncan has years of experience in education, leadership and public service.

Before transitioning in 2015 to operating a residential and commercial real estate development company, Duncan spent more than 20 years in public education as a teacher and principal. He then worked for nearly eight years at the West Virginia Department of Education as executive director of the Office of Middle School and Secondary Education.

Duncan also served as a governor-appointed member of the West Virginia Public Charter School Board from June 2018 through August 2025 and has served as president of the WVSOM Foundation, the school’s nonprofit office responsible for charitable and philanthropic efforts.

Nemitz, Ph.D., WVSOM's president, will join Ericke Cage, J.D., LL.M., West Virginia State University's president, for a discussion called "Educating the Future: Higher Education's Role in West Virginia's Growth." The discussion will take place Sept. 4 during the 2026 West Virginia Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Meeting and Business Summit at The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, WV.

The Class of 2030 White Coat Ceremony, taking place at 2 p.m, Sept. 11, will celebrate students' commitment to health care careers.

The keynote speaker will be Dara Aliff, D.O., a WVSOM alumna who is the founder and owner of Premier Women’s Health Specialists PLLC, a Charleston, WV-based practice that has provided care to tens of thousands of women since 2009.

Aliff is a West Virginia native and a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in zoology from Marshall University before earning a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree in 1999 from WVSOM, where she served as class president and student body president. Aliff completed a rotating internship and an obstetrics and gynecology residency at Charleston Area Medical Center, where she was chief resident and received multiple teaching awards.

On West Virginia Day at the State Fair of West Virginia, James W. Nemitz, Ph.D., WVSOM's president, joined Gov. Patrick Morrisey; State Fair of West Virginia CEO Kelly Tuckwiller Collins; Secretary of State Kris Warner; West Virginia Agriculture Commissioner Kent Leonhardt, members of the fair’s Advisory Board of Directors, members of the National Guard and others for a Mountaineer Mile walk around the fairgrounds. The Mountaineer Mile is a health and wellness initiative launched by Morrisey that encourages residents to walk at least one mile each day.

West Virginia Day on the fairgrounds also included a Farming Heritage Luncheon, during which Morrisey recognized Henderson Farms, of Wetzel County, as the 2026 recipient of the West Virginia Farming Heritage Award.
