We are super excited to welcome Ida Piedmonte as a new tenure track Assistant Professor in our department! Ida's interests lie at the intersection of chemistry, environmental science, industry and public policy. She will teach separation science, general chemistry and environmental chemistry. Her research will focus on the speciation and stability of molten salt energy systems and the fate and transport of metal pollutants in the environment. Welcome Ida!!

Monique Brown '07 was recently spotlighted in a discussion of racial disparities in COVID-19 infection and outcome.

When Monique Brown looks at population health, the epidemiologist considers conditions that can make it better — and worse — for different groups of people. When it comes to the COVID-19 pandemic, Brown says, there are myriad pre-existing conditions that make the virus far worse for African Amer...

Can we look at the memories of mice? Thanks to neuroscience, it appears the answer is yes.

Chemistry major Gabriele Gucagaite '21 of Kaunas, Lithuania, takes part in funded Bates research that sounds like science fiction.⁣

She's creating slides and images that show, through fluorescent imaging of brain proteins, actual mouse memories, such as a specific taste or smell.⁣

More astonishing: The neuroscience research she's doing, with Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry Andrew Kennedy,⁣ also involves altering or enhancing the memories that a mouse has.⁣

”This is what neuroscience looks like now,” says Kennedy. “Things like memory, emotion, thoughts — human experiences that have always seemed very abstract — we now are finding the physical underpinnings.”⁣

A rising senior, Gucagaite is one of several students who have been living on campus due to the pandemic.⁣

So proud of our majors who independently started a summer journal club in the midst of a pandemic. Today was the inaugural discussion, and they gave most graduate students a run for their money, discussing Carolyn Bertozzi's paper, "Precision Glycocalyx Editing as a Strategy for Cancer Immunotherapy"
