Pull up a chair or a carpet square and join EES faculty in a read aloud of Old Rock (is not boring) by Deb Pilutti. This children's book is about a rock's journey through time, and it's read here by some of our faculty researching the many different parts of that journey, involving volcanoes, glaciers, erosion, changes in climate, and more.

Registered children in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library receive one free book every month from birth until they turn five. Old Rock (is not boring) was first added to the Imagination Library Book List in 2021 and was sent to the oldest cohort, children who were born in 2016. It's still a part of the program, included this year as the bilingual (English-Spanish) version.

Therefore, we look forward to meeting our first old-rock-loving “Dolly Cohort” at the start of the fall semester in 2034 💙🪨🦋

This afternoon we bid an appreciative farewell to Meaghan, our Department Manager since 2022, before she heads out for her next adventure in Florida. There were many thanks, laughter, pizza, and even a sing-a-long led by Dr. Fryar on the ukulele. If you didn’t get a chance to join us, stop by her office tomorrow and thank her for helping keep EES running smoothly these past few years!

As we start the new academic year, we'd like to introduce some of the faces you'll be seeing around EES. To kick things off, meet the 2026-2027 G3 officers: President Austin, Vice President Zoe, and Secretary-Treasurer Jt.

This is a trio of multitaskers, as all three of these MS students are known for their ability to juggle multiple commitments. This time last year, Austin had just completed a Half Ironman, Zoe was a full-time UK employee for the first year of her MS, and Jt was a triple major for his undergrad. We have no doubt that this will be a successful year for G3!

G3, or the Geoscience Graduate Group, is a representative body for currently enrolled graduate students in EES. G3 is responsible for maintaining communication between the EES graduate students and the faculty, as well as interfacing with the Graduate Student Congress, as needed.

They’re spending this week and next in various trainings and orientations, as well as prepping for their teaching and research assignments, so a chance to play some games and get to know our new additions was much appreciated!

Last week we gave away 💰over 50k💰 in awards and scholarships to our EES majors! We'd like to acknowledge our students whose hard work this year in their classes and in service of the department paid off, but also to our alumni, who understand the value in supporting our students in their education.

Thank you to the students, faculty, and friends who joined us at the awards lunch, and we will share more highlights from the day over the coming weeks! 📸

At 12:59 local time (1:59 EST), a magnitude 4.0 earthquake occurred in southeastern Missouri, approximately 2 km west of the town of Cooter, Mo., at a depth of 12 km. The earthquake occurred in the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ), and is the largest event recorded in the NMSZ for more than 20 years. The event occurred within a tight cluster of historical earthquake activity associated with the Axial fault, the longest fault mapped in the NMSZ (approximately 120 km long).

Hundreds of people reported feeling the earthquake, with shaking reportedly felt as far away as Henderson, Ky. (approximately 270 km, or 170 miles). The seismic waves from this earthquake were well recorded across by 's Kentucky Seismic and Strong-Motion Network.

We're only TWO WEEKS AWAY from the best day of the year! 🏆💰

May 1st kicks off with our spring alumni board meeting after which everyone in EES joins together for lunch as we celebrate our student achievements from the year and give out scholarships. The afternoon is dedicated to ReSEES, the student-run research symposium where EES graduate and undergraduate students give posters and talks on their research. That evening, we all gather for our end-of-year picnic to celebrate our accomplishments and find out who won the various photo and art show categories and gets to take home the cash prizes.
