Check this out! 🗣️ Brandi Frisby, associate provost for academic affairs, studied how virtual reality (VR) and 360-degree video can reduce public speaking anxiety.

Frisby’s research was enabled by a Celebrating University Research Across the Enterprise (CURATE) grant, a program funded by the Office of the Vice President for Research.

The project was a collaborative effort involving Jessalyn Vallade, an associate professor in the School of Information Science within CI, and Renee Kaufmann, associate dean for graduate programs in communication, Joe Martin, a senior lecturer in the Lewis Honors College and in SIS, and Kody Frey, who now serves as an associate professor and director of public speaking at University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Public speaking can feel like a nightmare. People fear it more than death, according to some surveys. But from classroom presentations to high-stakes job interviews, public speaking is a core skill for success. To help abate that fear, Brandi Frisby and her team examined how 360-degree video and vir...

New academic year, new CI Ambassadors! 🙂‍↕️

We're kicking things off with Kevine "Vee" Niyo! Vee is a returning amby from Louisville, Kentucky, pursuing a dual degree in information communication technology and communication. She chose to be an ambassador because of the wonderful connections she can make and the opportunity to represent CI. If you don't see her in Pence Hall, she's around campus as president of the QueerPOC Association or serving the community as a volunteer at God's Pantry!

Fun fact: Vee is a huge Spider-Man fan (and trust she's seen Brand New Day)! 🕸️

“I grew up watching CNN and took the tour in Atlanta when I was 13 years old, and it all seemed so overwhelming,” Rose said. “But some adults who saw my interest in news as a kid used to say, ‘I’ll bet you end up at CNN one day.’ It just took me a while to believe them.”

Read what journalism alum Andy Rose has to say about his recent promotion to senior news desk reporter at CNN:

Andy Rose, a 1999 graduate of the School of Journalism and Media in the University of Kentucky College of Communication and Information, has been promoted to senior news desk reporter at CNN, marking a significant milestone in his nearly two-decade career with the network.

Price Atkinson, a 1997 journalism alumnus from the College of Communication and Information, is reflecting on how his time at UK helped launch a global career in sports communication that has taken him to multiple Winter Olympic Games.

Atkinson, who worked as a press officer during the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and later as an English-speaking PA announcer for curling at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, said both experiences offered unique challenges and rewards at the highest level of international sport.

Working in a global, high-pressure environment required constant adaptability, especially when navigating language barriers, and in his role, Atkinson balanced speed, accuracy and storytelling while helping shape narratives around Team USA. 🏅

Two University of Kentucky students, including recent CI alum Morgan David, and a faculty emeritus have received UK’s highest honor for humanitarian efforts — the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award. 🏆

Established by the New York Southern Society in 1925 and named for its first president, Algernon Sydney Sullivan, the award recognizes those “who exhibit Sullivan’s ideals of heart, mind and conduct as evince a spirit of love for and helpfulness to other men and women.” After the society closed, the award has lived on through the Sullivan Foundation and is given at several universities in the South.

At UK, the Sullivan Award is bestowed each year on two graduating seniors and one citizen who has a connection to the university.
