Young spellers from across Central Kentucky can take their skills to the national stage through the University of Kentucky College of Education’s Big Blue Bee, March 27 at Gatton Student Center.

Schools in 42 Central Kentucky counties, including private, cooperative and home schools, are invited to participate in the regional competition. The winner will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., with the UK College of Education sponsoring the student’s trip.

Open to students in grades one through eight, the Big Blue Bee gives schools an opportunity to celebrate literacy and learning while offering their top spellers a pathway to compete alongside students from across the country.

To participate, educators must register their schools through the Scripps educator portal. The Scripps enrollment fee is $199 per school through Nov. 30. The fee increases to $225 from Dec. 1 through Jan. 29.

It's CaneTucky at UK! Today we’re celebrating National White Cane Day and the white cane’s role in supporting independence for people who are blind or have low vision.

The event gives school-age students from across Kentucky the opportunity to practice real-world travel skills with support from UK students and trained specialists in the College of Education’s Orientation and Mobility program.

CaneTucky is sponsored by the Lexington Lions Club and Kentucky School for the Blind Charitable Foundation.

Congratulations to Danelle Stevens-Watkins, Ph.D., professor of counseling psychology in the University of Kentucky College of Education, who has been named the 2026 recipient of Spalding University’s highest honor, the Caritas Medal!

The award recognizes individuals whose lives and work reflect a commitment to service, compassion and leadership.

For Stevens-Watkins, the recognition from her alma mater is also an opportunity to reflect on the mentors who shaped her path and how she is paying that support forward through her own research and mentorship.

“At this stage in my career, I am focused on paving the way for others coming behind me by creating opportunities and investing in the success of others,” she said.

A Kentucky native, Stevens-Watkins has built a nationally recognized research career focused on improving health and well-being while mentoring the next generation of scholars.
