🖤 Remembering Coach Harry B. Johnson

A visitation and celebration of life for Harry Johnson, who was known to generations of Lexington students and athletes simply as Coach Johnson, will be Tues July 7th at the K House. Harry passed away peacefully last Monday at the age of 88, surrounded by loved ones.

From his All-State days at Fleming-Neon to the University of Kentucky football field, and later as a coach, mentor, and KHSAA Hall of Famer, Coach Johnson dedicated his life to shaping young people. He built the first wrestling and gymnastics programs at Tates Creek Junior High, coached 17 county championship football teams, and poured integrity, discipline, and grit into thousands of Titans.

His legacy lives on in the Harry B. Johnson Trophy and in every player who learned that people mattered more than championships.

This week’s K Club spotlight shines on Bob Jones, a Lexington native who turned a childhood dream into a lifelong connection to the University of Kentucky.

Cut in middle school but never deterred, Bob walked on at Kentucky and earned a scholarship, becoming a 4-year Letterwinner (‘68–‘71) and later a scholarship starter. He went on to become a record holder and made his mark as one of Kentucky’s top kickers.

After his playing days, he went on to coach at the high school level, developing 14 Division I athletes and 2 NFL players, and now serves as a K Club Board Member & Secretary.

From walk-on to record holder, that’s what it means to be a Kentucky Letterwinner. 💙

This week in our Letterwinner Library, we’re highlighting Living Beyond the Dream by Jarrod Polson.

From a lifelong Kentucky kid dreaming of Rupp Arena to actually wearing the blue and white, Jarrod takes us inside the journey – the challenges, the championships, and everything in between.

But the real lesson? It’s not just about reaching the dream. It’s about who you become along the way. How you carry yourself. How you lead. How you handle the limited minutes, the doubters, the victories, and the defeats.

This is a must‑read for any young athlete or anyone chasing a goal that feels impossible.
