“It’s exciting to see and learn about the breadth of experiences as well as courses taken in other majors that ultimately lead many students in our department to pursue a degree in Human Development and Family Science. Just like in my case, many students are unfamiliar with or have never heard of our major but have always had a keen interest in learning and studying about children or adolescents in preparation for careers in helping professions or for advanced training.

One of my favorite parts about teaching undergraduate students is simply exposing them to new ideas related to adolescent development, to completely different developmental experiences that teens might or go through in different cultures, even inside the United States, thereby providing student with more meaning and a greater understanding of how teens develop in the United States today.

I also regularly recruit undergraduates to work in my research lab and to expose them to the research enterprise and process; most students who are motivated to do so subsequently go to graduate school and get advanced training. Watching students who respond to an invitation that I provide or seek out such an opportunity with me develop and grow, then successfully move on to Master’s and even Ph.D. programs is a tremendously gratifying process. Hear from Dr. Vazsonyi, a professor in the Family Science Department, the Director of Family Science Graduate Studies, and highly-cited researcher:

What made you want to pursue a career in the Family Sciences field?

“I majored in Biopsychology as an undergraduate student and then decided to pursue graduate training which is when I learned about and had the opportunity to enter a Ph.D. program in what was called Division of Family Studies at the University of Arizona. Within the first year of my studies, I became exceptionally interested in research I was exposed to which focused on adolescents and adolescent development, in part also because some of his applied work could be used to better the lives of teenagers. These were defining experiences that showed me the path that I would follow professionally.”

What is one piece of advice you would give to students who are interested in pursuing a career related to Family Sciences?

“If you are interested in pursuing a career that focuses on the development of children, adolescents, or young adults, then Human Development and Family Science is the major for you!”

Faculty Spotlight: Learn more about Emily Bollinger, a Child Life Clinical Instructor in the HDFS department!

1. What made you want to pursue a career in the Family Sciences field?

“I became interested in supporting hospitalized children and their families at a very young age and learned about the specific role of a Child Life Specialist during a summer job in college and knew it was the career I wanted to pursue.”

What is your favorite part about teaching and working with Family Sciences students?

“I get to work with incredibly smart and passionate students who are committed to supporting children and families during the most difficult periods of their lives. I really enjoy helping them develop into capable professionals who will positively impact thousands of families throughout their careers.”

Last week, three students shared doctoral presentations focused on advanced research methods and statistical analysis.

The presentations covered:

Dinara Kussain — Classical Test Theory Analysis in SPSS & Mplus

Tayrana Lima da Trindade Eleuterio — Regression and Moderation Analysis with PROCESS in SPSS
Nanayakkara — Foundations of Statistical Models and Linear Regression
