Please join us in congratulating Mary Akingbasote, a UK Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Ph.D. student, for being selected as a 2026-2029 Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research Fellow!

Growing up on a poultry farm in Nigeria sparked her first agricultural inquiry: What if there was no need for a waste company to clean up after their chickens, and how could her family find a source of income in the process?

Akingbasote earned her undergraduate degree in agriculture, then she studied engineering at Penn State. That's when she came across UK and Tyler Barzee's Bioprocessing Laboratory. She was interested in Barzee’s lab because it focuses on her research topic: how humans can generate something useful from waste.

“I am inspired by Mary’s passion for upgrading agricultural wastes and also her self-driven attitude to work as hard as she can to realize her goals and dreams," Barzee said.

As a FFAR Fellow, Akingbasote will receive professional development and career guidance with graduate level professionals from across the country.

“The goal of the program is for us to have both the research skills and the soft skills to thrive in our workplace,” Akingbasote said.

We’re excited to celebrate UK BAE's Omega Chapter of Alpha Epsilon, named the Most Outstanding Chapter at the 2026 ASABE Annual Meeting!

Last year, the chapter launched its first FE Exam Study Series, engaged more than 100 high school students through Engineering Day and BE A STAR Night, continued its long-standing international book donation project, and welcomed 12 new initiates.

Huge congratulations to our members — well deserved 🎉
