KY Epsilon (‘51)
KY Epsilon Alumni Hall of Fame
Happy Heavenly Big Blue Birthday to Fort Lauderdale, Florida's, Charles "Fig" Newton.
Not only did C.M. play for Coach Rupp, and the Wildcats, he went on to have an outstanding career in basketball for 50 years.
He played on the 1950-51 UK team that won a National Championship, and he went on to coach at neighboring Transylvania University. He never planned on leaving Lexington, but Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, who was the Athletic Director as well, convinced C.M. to become Alabama's new coach, and he took the job. He was the first coach to integrate Alabama Basketball. He would go on to win 3 consecutive SEC titles, and won SEC Coach of the Year twice (1972 & 1976). Later on he would go on to coach at Vanderbilt University as well.
C.M. also served on the coaching staff with Coach Bob Knight, for the 1984 U.S. Olympic basketball team that would go on to win a Gold Medal, as well as the 1992 Dream Team that won the gold.
As we all know, C.M. would later return to Kentucky, and become UK's new Athletic Director, and he played a huge roll in restoring UK Basketball to it's former glory. He wasted no time in hiring Coach Rick Pitino to become Kentucky's new head Men's Basketball Coach. During his time as AD at UK, the Cats won 2 NCAA Titles.
C.M. was inducted into the State of Kentucky Athletics Hall of Fame, the University of Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame, as well as the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. His jersey is retired, and hangs from the rafters at Rupp Arena.
C.M. also served his Country in the U.S. Military. 🇺🇸
Mr. Newton on getting inducted into the Hall of Fame ... "Basketball has afforded me things I could have never gotten any other way, so I've tried to give something back. I assume that's what this (honor) is for, because it sure isn't because I was a great player, a great coach or a great AD. It must be a compilation of what I've given back to the sport." 💙
