Founded in 1908 from a law program initiated at Transylvania University in 1799, the University of Kentucky College of Law was one of the nation's first state law schools. Congratulations to Makayla Nusbaum ’27, who is serving as the Delegate of Mental Health and Wellness for the American Bar Association’s Law Student Division.

In this national leadership role, Makayla works to advance mental health and well-being among law students by developing wellness programming, promoting resources, leading awareness initiatives, and creating opportunities for peer support. She also chairs the Division’s Wellness Committee and serves as a member of the ABA Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs (CoLAP), helping advocate for policies and initiatives that prioritize law student well-being.

We are proud to see Makayla representing UK Rosenberg Law and making an impact on the well-being of law students across the country.

James Donovan, Ph.D., the Dorothy Salmon Professor at the J. David Rosenberg College of Law at the University of Kentucky, has been honored as a 2026-27 University Research Professor.

Drawing on expertise that spans law, library science and anthropology, Donovan’s research explores how legal systems, information institutions and human rights shape people’s lives. His work examines issues of gender, sexuality and human rights, while also addressing the evolving role of libraries, scholarly communication and the ways different cultures create and interpret legal institutions.

On Thursday, March 26, the Women’s Law Caucus student organization held its annual Spring Reception. During the reception, held at The Cornerstone in Lexington, Kentucky, the Women’s Law Caucus recognized Justice Pamela Goodwine, a 1994 law school alumna, and Amy Collier Eason, director of Career Development and a 2004 alumna, with Outstanding Legal Service Awards. Judge Jennifer Coffman, a 1978 alumna, also delivered remarks. Second-year law student Tyler Cole-Hobbs was presented with the Rebecca Westerfield Award. The Westerfield Award is given annually to a rising third-year law student who has demonstrated excellence in leadership on campus, in the civic sphere, in the arts, or in scholarly research and writing.

The John G. Heyburn II Initiative for Excellence in the Federal Judiciary and the University of Kentucky J. David Rosenberg College of Law are pleased to host the Honorable Stephen G. Breyer, associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States (retired), and the Honorable Charles R. Breyer, senior judge of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

The event will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 13, 2026, in the Concert Hall of the Singletary Center for the Arts, located at 405 Rose Street, Lexington, KY 40508.

The conversation will be moderated by UK Rosenberg College of Law Interim Dean James C. Duff.

The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

Undergraduate students from 19 universities across the country participated in the American Moot Court Association Final Round of the National Tournament held Saturday, Feb. 21 – Sunday, Feb. 22, 2026, at the University of Kentucky J. David Rosenberg College of Law, co-hosted with Berea College.

Local attorneys and judges, including many UK Rosenberg Law alumni, as well as law faculty, volunteered to serve as justices for each round of the tournament. Current law students also volunteered to serve as bailiffs and justices.
