Washington and Lee University is significantly expanding the W&L Promise, its tuition guarantee program, pledging that students from families with an annual household income of less than $200,000 will attend tuition-free, starting in fall 2027.

This expansion raises the W&L Promise income threshold from $150,000, thereby extending the tuition-free guarantee to more middle-income families. The W&L Promise, which launched in 2014, is one of the oldest tuition-guarantee programs in the country.

This summer, W&L students working with Joel Kuehner, professor of physics and engineering, gained hands-on experience exploring concepts with applications ranging from satellite navigation to space exploration.

Students continued the design, fabrication and characterization of an existing ion thruster, learning how electric propulsion uses electric fields to accelerate ions. They designed physical components, made measurements and investigated the thrust developed. And they also learned how to apply particle image velocimetry, a laser-based velocity measurement technique, to observe the starting transients in a buoyant plume in a convective fluid mechanics experiment.

This summer, students working with Margaret Anne Hinkle, associate professor of earth and environmental geoscience, are gaining hands-on experience through laboratory and field experiments. Their research focuses on acid mine drainage (AMD) and rare earth elements, also referred to as critical minerals.

As part of a collaborative National Science Foundation-funded project with the University of Pittsburgh and Hedin Environmental, the team is exploring whether the byproduct of acid mine drainage remediation — manganese oxides formed with the help of naturally occurring fungi — could be used to extract rare earth elements from AMD-impacted waters in an economically viable way.

Washington and Lee University faculty are putting their research on the map — literally. This summer, Mackenzie Brooks, professor and digital humanities librarian, and Cal Bryan, assistant professor of economics, are using ArcGIS, a web-based mapping software, to take an innovative approach to their research, collaborating with undergraduate students through W&L’s Summer Research Scholars program.

Keegen Dzurko ’28 is working with Brooks to produce a digital story map that explores the history of the Maury River in Rockbridge County, Virginia. Meanwhile, Rachel Collins ’27, Andrew Deppen ’28 and Sulav Sapkota ’29 are working with Bryan to investigate how aircraft have been employed in combating active wildfires.
