Lewis Honors College Honors provides an environment for the best and brightest students to push themselves and each other.

Each Honors student completes at least 15 hours of Honors courses in a flexible curriculum. Courses include small-group seminars with leading faculty in the arts and humanities, and the social, natural and physical sciences, and interesting courses from disciplines across the university’s undergraduate colleges. A senior capstone or thesis that brings focus to your learning is also required. Additionally, Honors students have wonderful opportunities to participation in Honors Education Abroad, Honors Research and Honors Service Learning.

Good food, great conversations, and even better company! Our latest Breakfast with Buss brought Honors students together for a morning of connecting with friends, enjoying breakfast, and catching up with Dean Buss. It was a great opportunity to take a break from busy schedules and spend time with the Honors community!

Lewis Honors College students volunteered at Living Archaeology Weekend (LAW) in the Red River Gorge, learning Kentucky history and technology crucial in Kentucky's past! LAW is an award-winning, immersive program that uses archaeological evidence to bring the region's pioneer history and ancient and contemporary Indigenous history and culture to life. Honors students helped educate and entertain Eastern Kentucky’s 5th graders through activities like weaving, wool-spinning, corn-grinding, atlatl hunting, flintknapping, cooking, Indigenous dance, and pottery-making. Join us next year for community building, camping, and archaeology fun on the third Friday in September! We enjoyed co-hosting the Kentucky Honors Roundtable with Bluegrass Community and Technical College this fall!

The event brought together members of the Honors community to exchange ideas, celebrate student scholarship, and share best practices among faculty and administrators. From engaging banquet conversations to over 90 presenters from eight different Honors programs, the breadth of research, creativity, and inquiry on display was inspiring.

Student oral presentations explored an impressive range of topics, including education; mental health; historic structures and cultural landscapes; literature and philosophy; study abroad; film, TV, and video games; rurality; scientific inquiry; cultural expressions; neurodivergence; the science of healthcare; labor, career, and economics; technology; and a variety of creative works and performances.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this fall’s Kentucky Honors Roundtable a success! We’re grateful for the opportunity to connect, learn from one another, and celebrate the outstanding work happening across Kentucky’s Honors community.

How much influence do campaign advertisements really have on voters? UCLA political scientist and Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Lynn Vavreck joined the Lewis Honors College for a discussion on The Unique Role of Campaign Advertising in American Elections. Attendees explored the history of television campaign ads, watched examples dating back to 1952, and learned how political advertising uses emotion and persuasion to connect with audiences.

Confidence is key when it comes to leadership! Our Rising Leaders students explored the power of executive presence during a hands-on session led by Dr. Beth Arnold, Professor of Vocal Performance at the UK School of Music. Students learned how posture, voice, body language, and other nonverbal cues can shape how others perceive them as leaders. They also practiced mindfulness and breathing techniques to help them stay calm, communicate confidently, and lead under pressure.

The Rising Leaders Program, led by Center for Personal Development counselor Ranym Nenneh, gives Honors students from all majors the opportunity to develop their leadership skills through two semesters of interactive workshops, activities, and real-world experiences. A big thank you to Honors Residential Experience Peer Mentors Ellen and Warda for hosting this event and creating a fun space for students to shop, socialize, and build community at the Lewis Honors College!
