VMI Biology Department

VMI Biology Department The biology department at VMI provides a focused education in the biological sciences.

We prepare students for post-graduate education in the biological and health fields and allow for specialization that matches their interests and career plans. Faculty believe interactions in the classroom, laboratory, and on an individual basis are critical in the development of successful biology majors. Class sizes are small, laboratories accompany most courses, advising is conducted on an indi

vidual basis, and undergraduate research is encouraged. You can find more recent photos from around the department on Flickr:

We appreciate our amazing Biology Alums allowing our current Cadets to gain valuable experiences shadowing them.

We share a lot about internships, but experiential learning comes in many forms! Our cadets often spend the summer doing job shadowing, especially if they are aiming to attend medical school.
Cadet Anthony Wilkerson '28 is using his summer to study for the MCAT and getting in some job shadowing.
"In terms of clinical experience, I've had the privilege of shadowing in toxicology with VMI alum Dr. John W. Downs, MD, MPH, DABT, FAACT, FACOEM '00. Additionally, I have set up and I am looking forward to a rotation with the VCU Health Sports Medicine department, focusing on orthopedics, as well as an opportunity with the VCU Health Systems Emergency Department. I would like to note that VMI alum Jethro Piland '96 was instrumental in helping me secure the emergency department shadowing opportunity. These experiences are helping me build a strong foundation as I work toward medical school." - Anthony Wilkerson '28
