When Sam Roberts began his therapy services at the University of Kentucky’s Child Development Center of the Bluegrass, he told his team he missed walking and wished he could throw a football with his friends.

Patrick Kitzman, Ph.D., physical therapist and professor in the University of Kentucky College of Health Sciences Department of Physical Therapy (University of Kentucky Physical Therapy Program) and the Rehabilitation and Health Sciences Ph.D. Program began brainstorming ideas on how Toys with a Purpose could help create a device to get Sam throwing a football again. He decided to also call on the University of Kentucky Pigman College of Engineering to see what they could do to help.

Congratulations to Alex Zan Paterson, assistant professor in the University of Kentucky Pigman College of Engineering, for being named to the 2026 Nature Awards Inspiring Women in Science shortlist in the Scientific Achievement category. She is one of only eight women selected worldwide in the category and the only woman based in the United States.

Presented in partnership with The Estée Lauder Companies Inc., the awards celebrate and support the achievements of women in science and all those who work to encourage girls and young women to engage with STEM subjects and stay in STEM careers around the world. The 2026 winner is scheduled to be announced Nov. 3 at a ceremony in London, England.

Paterson is a The Lighthouse Beacon Foundation Scholar and an assistant professor of materials engineering with a joint appointment in electrical engineering. Her Organic Materials and Devices Laboratory is based at the UK Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER), where her team studies new forms of semiconductors and the fundamental physics that determine how those materials perform in devices.

Last Thursday, alumni, students, faculty and friends gathered to celebrate 125 years of preparing engineers to build, power and protect the nation’s minerals industry. 🪨🎉

The UK Mining Engineering 125th Anniversary Gala brought together generations of UK mining engineers to share and reflect upon the legacy of mining engineering at UK, and to look toward the future of a field facing new demands for critical minerals, advanced technology and a larger engineering workforce.

Mining instruction was first offered at UK in 1869, leading to the first organized course offering in 1895 and then the establishment of the Department of Mining Engineering in 1901. Today, it is one of only 14 accredited mining engineering programs in the nation.

What happens when a spacecraft plunges through a planet's atmosphere?

Dan Fries, Ph.D., assistant professor and researcher in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is working to find out.

With support from a NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration Early Career Faculty Award, Fries is developing advanced technology to measure the extreme plasma conditions spacecraft encounter during atmospheric entry. The research could lead to safer, more efficient spacecraft and help advance the future of space.

Engineering Grand Tours are held most Monday afternoons from late September through April. Grand Tours allow prospective students and their guests to learn about the Pigman College of Engineering, co-ops and internships, scholarships, campus life and hear directly from professors and students. You’ll also tour state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories where researchers are conducting groundbreaking research!
