“When I first came back, I looked out at the cattle. What I learned over the years was it was more important that I looked down to the ground.”

For fourth-generation Sandhills rancher Homer Buell, long-term ranching success comes down to one core shift: moving from managing cattle to managing grasslands.

Through decades of collaboration with UNL researchers and Extension educators, Buell’s dedication to land stewardship is helping inform new research on Nebraska’s rangelands.

When Homer Buell first returned to his family’s Sandhills ranch after attending the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, his focus was primarily on the cattle. Over time, his experience gave him a broader insight into cattle management.

As an Associate Professor and Precision Livestock Management Specialist at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Dr. Xiong's research focuses on integrating emerging technologies into beef cattle production to improve management efficiency and decision-making.

During her presentation, Dr. Xiong will provide an overview of virtual fencing technology and share the latest research findings as adoption continues to expand across the beef industry. 🌾 Speaker Spotlight: Sara Cover 🌾

We're excited to welcome Sara Cover to the Nebraska Grazing Conference, August 4–5, 2026, at the Younes Conference Center in Kearney, Nebraska!

Raised on a registered Hereford operation near Oshkosh, Nebraska, Sara's passion for the cattle industry began at an early age. Her career has spanned livestock production, animal health, feed, and beef supply chains, giving her a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing today's producers.

Currently serving as the Supplier Development Program Manager for Greater Omaha Packing, Sara works directly with ranchers to strengthen supply chains and create added value at the ranch level. Since 2023, she has become a leading resource in pasture-based carbon programs, helping producers navigate emerging carbon markets. Her work has helped enroll more than 800,000 acres, generating over $6 million in returns for ranching operations.

Alongside her husband, Matt, Sara owns and operates Cover Angus Ranch, where they raise registered Angus cattle while raising their three children.
