Our Hixson-Lied Visiting Artist and Scholar Lecture Series kicks off on Thursday, Sept. 3 with muralist Hannah Webb, who is also known as "The Obanoth" on social media. Her lecture will be at 5:30 p.m. in Sheldon Museum of Art.

Webb is a Los Angeles-based artist with a focus on dynamic abstracted realism. Although her signature art style is graphic, the work is rooted in a fine arts background, and she begins all pieces with a brush regardless of the size of the project.

What does it take to create a mural that tells the story of an entire community?

For senior art major Katie Dia, it took a bold idea, months of research and planning—and a village.

This summer, Dia designed and led the creation of “A Commemoration to America 250th: Nebraska City,” a vibrant public mural celebrating the history of the community she calls home. From Lewis and Clark and Arbor Day to Arbor Lodge, windmills and Nebraska’s state symbols, the mural creates a colorful, abstract journey through Nebraska City’s past.

But Katie didn’t create it alone. She brought together fellow UNL students, high school students and community volunteers to help transform her vision into a work of public art.

“Making a project like this happen really took a village,” Dia said.

The project gave Katie the opportunity to put her UNL education into practice while giving something meaningful back to the community that helped shape her as an artist.

See how one big idea became a lasting piece of Nebraska City’s story at https://go.unl.edu/5bkq.
