Plants, ponds and kayaks are a few of the tools that sophomore Sophia Donner uses in her Undergraduate Student Research Fellowship from the Nebraska Water Center this summer. Donner and a fellow BSE undergraduate student roam several Lincoln-area ponds each month to measure the effectiveness of floating plant platforms designed to mitigate algae growth in the waters.

“Most of the time, when people think of engineering projects or anything related to engineering, they think you're just constructing something new, right off the bat,” says Sophia Donner. “You're designing, you're reconstructing, you're making a whole new world. But a lot of engineering problems are dealing with what you have, like, right now, and keep working with it.”

As a generation of seed industry professionals nears retirement, the industry faces a growing need for agronomists with specialized training in seed science.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Department of Agronomy and Horticulture is working to address that need through the Seed Industry Scholars program, which combines specialized coursework with experiential learning opportunities.

“If you’re an agronomy student — or a high schooler interested in studying agronomy — I can’t recommend this program enough,” Nick Daberkow said. “It’s letting me discover which areas of agriculture interest me the most.”

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s longstanding tradition of remembering Sept. 11 through service is providing a foundation for a month of expanded service opportunities surrounding the 25th anniversary of the attacks.

Andrew Brown, assistant director of community engagement in the Student Leadership, Involvement and Community Engagement Office, identified an opportunity to bring several of Nebraska’s existing Sept. 11 traditions together through a $10,000 grant from 9/11 Day and AmeriCorps.

The grant proposal incorporates the university’s annual Memorial Stadium stair climb, flag remembrance and Engage Lincoln volunteer opportunities, while also making possible new service projects.

“We already had these pieces in place,” Brown said. “The grant gave us an opportunity to bring them together, add some resources and invite more people into the work.”

Utech Ventures is launching the Innovation Advancement Fund, a proof-of-concept funding program designed to help move promising university research from the laboratory toward commercialization.

The Innovation Advancement Fund supports researchers in generating evidence to propel their innovations toward licensing, startup creation, practical application, and overall market readiness. NUtech Ventures will manage the fund with an annual allocation of $100,000 from the Office of Research and Innovation.

“The ultimate goal of this program is to provide critical funding at a time in a technology’s lifeline when there are few other sources,” said Cheryl Horst, executive director of NUtech Ventures.

"Welcome to a new academic year. I'm always struck by the energy, optimism, and excitement this time of year. Whether you are returning to our community or joining us for the first time as a faculty member, staff member, or student, I want to extend my warmest welcome to each of you.

The beginning of a new semester brings renewed opportunities to learn, discover, connect, and make a difference, and I'm excited for all that we will accomplish together. As we begin this new year together, I'm reminded of the impact our community continues to make. I'm proud of the work happening across IANR. Your efforts are critically important, creating positive change here in Nebraska and around the world. The discoveries you advance, the students you mentor, the communities you serve, and the partnerships you build all contribute to a stronger future.

That impact reflects something I have long believed throughout my career with IANR. Our greatest strength is our people. Our faculty, staff, students are talented, passionate, and focused on the future. You bring creativity, resiliency, and a deep sense of purpose to the work that truly matters. Together you turn challenges into opportunities and ideas into meaningful outcomes. I have profound respect for each of you and I'm truly grateful for all that you do.

A second belief that has guided me is that we are stronger together. Over the years I have had the privilege of working alongside incredibly talented faculty, dedicated staff, and inspiring students across IANR, NCTA, and the university. Those experiences have reinforced my confidence that our greatest successes come through collaboration, shared purpose, and a commitment to one another.

As we look ahead, I believe IANR's strongest future is the one that we will co-create together. By continuing to build on our collective strengths, embracing new opportunities, and supporting one another, we can continue to advance our mission and expand our impact. This is our moment to set the course for the next decade of land-grant impact by championing innovation, elevating bold ideas, building powerful partnerships, strengthening communities, and preparing the next generation of changemakers as we position IANR at the forefront of solving the most pressing challenges and most promising opportunities facing Nebraska and the world.
