🌍 How can understanding the past help us respond to the challenges of today?

Meet Dr. Tim Turnquist, Assistant Professor of Practice in UNL’s School of Global Integrative Studies and Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs.

A historian by training, Dr. Turnquist specializes in the history of Jewish and “non-Aryan” Christian refugees from N**i Germany, examining questions of migration, displacement, identity, and belonging that continue to resonate today. At Nebraska, he brings those historical perspectives into courses on global studies, human rights, and contemporary trends in migration.

But his work with students is also about looking forward.

As director of the Social Entrepreneurship Certificate, Dr. Turnquist helps students think about how they can turn their interests and values into meaningful social impact. The program combines leadership, innovation, ethical decision-making, and hands-on experiences to prepare students to work with mission-driven organizations and tackle real-world challenges.

Through internships and other opportunities, he connects students with faculty and community partners and encourages them to ask an important question: How can what I’m learning make a difference?

⚖️🌍 What does it mean to be a human rights changemaker?

Meet Dr. Julia Reilly, Assistant Professor of Practice in UNL’s School of Global Integrative Studies and Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs, whose teaching and research explore some of the most pressing questions facing communities around the world.

Dr. Reilly’s work focuses on human rights, genocide, civil war, international law, transitional justice, and refugee resettlement. She examines how individuals, communities, and institutions respond to violence and human rights violations, and what justice, accountability, and rebuilding can look like in their aftermath.

But studying human rights isn’t just about understanding problems. It’s also about learning how to create change. Dr. Reilly created the Human Rights Changemaker Internship Program, which gives students the opportunity to connect what they learn in the classroom with hands-on work addressing human rights issues in their communities.

Her current research also brings global questions close to home, including work examining refugee resettlement and integration in Nebraska and the Midwest.

Whether students are interested in human rights advocacy, international law, conflict, migration, nonprofit work, or global affairs, Dr. Reilly’s courses challenge them to think critically about the world, and the role they can play in changing it.

✨ Understanding human rights is important. Learning how to stand up for them can be transformative.

🌍 What does it take to turn a new place into home?

Meet Dr. Emira Ibrahimpasic, Associate Professor of Practice and Assistant Director of Global Studies in UNL’s School of Global Integrative Studies.

As a cultural anthropologist, Dr. Ibrahimpasic explores migration, refugee resettlement, identity, and belonging, and how people and communities navigate social and cultural change. Much of her recent research focuses right here in Nebraska, examining the state’s history of refugee resettlement and the experiences of immigrants and refugees who have made Nebraska home.

Her work asks important questions: How do communities respond to migration? What roles do local governments, nonprofits, community organizations, immigrants, and refugees play in creating welcoming communities? And what helps newcomers not only participate in a community, but truly feel that they belong?

Those questions also come into the classroom. Dr. Ibrahimpasic connects global issues to students’ lives through research, internships, community partnerships, education abroad, and experiential learning. She has led students to Belize, India, Belgium and the Netherlands, Ireland and the United Kingdom, and Québec.

She also serves as Faculty Coordinator for Nebraska Peace Corps Prep and Faculty Advisor for the Museum Studies Certificate, while mentoring students interested in research, fellowships, international experiences, and globally engaged careers.

✨ Global issues aren’t always somewhere else. Sometimes, understanding the world begins right here at home.

🌎 What if your classroom stretched from the Great Plains all the way to Iceland?

Meet Dr. Rebecca Buller, Associate Professor of Practice in UNL’s School of Global Integrative Studies and a cultural and historical geographer who believes some of the best ways to understand the world are to get out and experience it.

Her work explores the connections between people, place, culture, environment, and justice, with interests ranging from the Great Plains and American West to environmental justice, women’s history, outdoor education, tourism, and Iceland.

And for Dr. Buller, geography isn’t something that happens only in a classroom. She brings experiential learning into her teaching through field tours and courses that encourage students to encounter landscapes, communities, and environmental issues firsthand. Her Geography Field Tours have explored places including Iceland, the Colorado Plateau, Nebraska and South Dakota, and the Northern Rockies.

Students can also learn with her in courses such as Environmental Justice, Cultural Geography, Geography of Nebraska, Introduction to Human Geography, and Women of the Great Plains.

🥾🌎 Geography is about more than knowing where places are, it’s about understanding what makes places matter.

On Sept. 18, celebrate the stories woven into our community at the 3rd Annual International Textiles Show-and-Tell! 🧵🌍

SGIS students, alumni, families, and friends are invited to take part in this special Lincoln Welcoming Week event at the International Quilt Museum. Explore textiles and personal stories from Lincoln's global community, enjoy FREE admission, refreshments, and access to all museum galleries.

You'll also be among the first to see American Creativity Continued: 1870s to 1970s, an exhibition curated by SGIS ANTH 492: Stitching Culture: US-Japan Quilt Exhibit Collaborative and Saitama University (Japan) students through a collaborative textile museum exhibit course.
