The University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Architecture's FACT designbuild studio will welcome the public to a series of free September events showcasing two innovative aging-ready homes designed and constructed as part of the OurStory Small Houses initiative.
The events offer an opportunity to experience firsthand how architecture, design and construction can address the growing need for housing that supports independence, accessibility and long-term livability. Events include a Sept. 9 webinar on accessory dwelling units, Sept. 12 and 13 open house tours, and a Sept. 14 ribbon-cutting ceremony with Omaha Mayor John Ewing Jr. celebrating the completion of major construction on the first two OurStory homes.

Designed by the College of Architecture's FACT designbuild studio and built in partnership with Holy Name Housing Corporation, the two demonstration homes, Benson House and Corby House, are located in Omaha's historic Benson neighborhood. Together, they illustrate how thoughtful architectural design can create flexible, efficient and welcoming housing options that support residents throughout their lives.
The project reflects the College of Architecture's commitment to addressing real-world challenges through design education, research and community engagement. Through FACT, students have the opportunity to design and construct full-scale projects while working directly with community partners and industry professionals.
Guided tours will highlight key aging-ready features incorporated into the homes, including zero-step entries, adaptable floor plans, customizable storage systems and all-electric, energy-efficient construction. Visitors will see how architecture can help support changing mobility needs while maintaining comfort, dignity and independence.
The open houses are supported through a 2026 AARP Community Challenge grant awarded to Partners for Livable Omaha.
