Summer sessions are here, but still thinking about these last-week-of-school memories ☀️✏️

Students in Jack Jeffries MATH 818 Introduction to Modern Algebra II took advantage of the beautiful weather by holding class outdoors! Graduate students worked together on problems using sidewalk chalk and our new rolling blackboard, turning campus into one big collaborative classroom.

Susan Hermiller has received the College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Research and Creative Activity Award for significant research and creative accomplishments.

Last year she and Mark Brittenham disproved a fundamental, 88-year-old conjecture in knot theory, which garnered press, surprised experts in the field, and will have implications for many other outstanding problems.

One of our graduate students, Sam Macdonald, has been selected as the AMS Mass Media Fellow! He will be spending 10 weeks in New York this summer, working with the staff at the Scientific American. Congratulations Sam! 👏

Our 28th Annual Rowlee Lecture (https://math.unl.edu/howard-rowlee-lecture-2026/) featured Professor Qing Nie (https://faculty.sites.uci.edu/qnie/) from University of California, Irvine who gave a wonderful presentation on ``Systems Learning of Single Cells." We learned about great research discoveries in orchestrating the multitudes of cells, building on the rich worlds of mathematics and biology. 🧬🔬🦠
