The Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders (SECD) is one of seven
academic departments in the College of Education and Human Sciences (CEHS) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Housed in the Barkley Memorial Center on Nebraska's East Campus, SECD includes the special education, speech-language pathology, and audiology programs. It is also home to the Barkley Speech Language and Hearing Clinic, which sees patients of all ages.

This May we are celebrating , which helps raise awareness to more than 40 million Americans who live with speech, language, and hearing challenges.

Here in the Barkley Memorial Center, we not only have the opportunity to treat these individuals from across Nebraska, but we also have the opportunity to teach, train, and prepare individuals in our degree areas to successfully help individuals in need nationwide.

Yesterday, our lab member Tess Szydlik presented at the 2026 Early Childhood Research Summit!
They shared their work on “AAC Use in Math Instruction for Students with Complex Communication Needs,” highlighting how communication supports can open up meaningful access to math learning. We’re so proud of their work and impact! 👏📊
