Now Accepting Abstracts: Great Plains Research 2027

Great Plains Research invites abstract submissions for its 2027 themed issue, "Healing the People, Healing the Land," timed to coincide with the Center for Great Plains Studies' annual conference.

We invite scholars, practitioners, and community partners to interpret the theme through their own lens: from social-ecological sciences to community health scholarship, from knowledge sovereignty and research accountability to creative and expressive practice. Work that crosses these registers, or redefines them, is especially welcome.

Abstracts are due October 15, 2026.

The Walking in the Footsteps of our Ancestors project will coordinate the painting of a mural created by four Otoe-Missouria artists at the Lincoln Indian Center starting July 27.

Dr. Jessica Moore Harjo (Otoe-Missouria/Osage/Pawnee) is serving as the lead artist and will be joined by Otoe-Missouria artists Marci Black, Paul Lucero, Regina Waters, as well as Otoe-Missouria youth visiting Lincoln during the annual youth trip.

The goal of the mural is to increase awareness of the project by increasing visibility through public art in Nebraska. The artwork will include floral appliqué designs, portraits of ancestors, a map of the area, nature elements, and words in the Otoe-Missouria language – all woven together in a theme of resiliency and land.

The public is invited to stop by and meet the artists and see the mural as it is being painted during the week of July 27-31.

On Saturday we hosted a cyanotype making workshop with Sheldon Museum of Art where participants learned about photography and created their own cyanotypes with our Outreach and Education Associate Dominique Ellis.

There's still time to sign up for our cyanotype workshop on July 11 in collaboration with the Sheldon Museum of Art.
This program will start with examining photographs currently on view at the Great Plains Art Museum before moving over to Sheldon for a cyanotype art activity.
