In UNL’s Global Studies program, we produce well-rounded, international citizens capable of navigating, translating, doing business, and improving conditions across borders, oceans, and cultures. We prepare our students to not only excel in an increasingly connected, complex and ever-changing world, but to change it for the better. In UNL’s top-notch facilities and our tight-knit classes, and by g

etting involved in study groups and the E.N. Thompson lecture series, our students become part of a dynamic community of impact makers and lifelong travelers. They gain unique perspective and broad knowledge of peoples, places and practices by experiencing them firsthand. Here, education abroad isn’t an option — it’s a requirement. Our graduates speak at least two languages, and work in places such as the American Embassy and for state senators on international operations.

Come spend your lunch hour with us, see the gallery on PBS, learn a little about the remarkable story of Eloise Kruger and her collection, and celebrate a project that has become a unique part of the SGIS community.

Dr. Bill “Guillo” Belcher is Lead Archaeologist on this partner mission and an Associate Professor of Anthropology; he focuses on research and teaching associated with forensic anthropology and archaeology focuses. Prior to coming to UNL in 2019, Dr. Belcher served with the DPAA and its predecessors. He retired as the Deputy Director in the Scientific Analysis Directorate of DPAA after 21 years of federal service.

Ms. Dakota Taylor (PhD candidate) stands ready in case Dr. Belcher falls while photographing recovered evidence!

Meet the UNL MIA Recovery Team working in France!

Dr. LuAnn Wandsnider is a Professor of Anthropology in the School of Global Integrative Studies. Of late, she has taught the introduction to archaeological field methods course to prepare students for success in the field, including DPAA missions. This is her third partner mission and she feels privileged to help return the missing to their families.

Meet the France MIA Recovery Team!

Jay Petersen is one of our volunteers, who is definitely what the military calls a “force multiplier”. Jay is a retired Nebraska State Trooper and he has volunteered for our UNL program four times. Jay has a keen interest in American History and especially those people who fought for our freedom and the freedom of our allies. Jay believes it’s very important that we do what we can to return those soldiers who are missing to their families.

Meet the France Recovery Team!

Dr. Brett Hoffman is a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln School of Global Integrative Studies. This is his third DPAA Partner mission with UNL and 7th overall. Brett has extensive CRM experience in the Midwestern US and has done field work in Pakistan and Chile.

Jessica Kirkman (Jess Kirkman) is a second year MA student with a focus on Forensic Anthropology at UNL. She earned her BS in Forensic Anthropology at Western Carolina University. This is her first DPAA mission.

Molly Nowak is going into her second year MA student in the Global Integrative Studies program with a focus on Forensic Anthropology. She received her BA in Anthropology and English at UNL in 2025. This is her first DPAA mission.

Meet the France MIA Recovery Team!

Micheal Biegel is currently pursuing his B.A. in Anthropology at the University of Nebraska Lincoln and is currently a junior. He is a U.S. Navy veteran, having served from 2018 to 2023 as an Engineman aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan.

This is his first DPAA mission, and he is honored to have the opportunity to gain great hands on experience in the field while assisting in the search for fellow veterans and to help bring them home to their families.

Maggie Klemm (Maggie Klemm😋 ) is a 3rd year PhD student in Global Integrative Studies with a focus in forensic anthropology at UNL. She received her MA in anthropology from UNL in 2024 and her BS in forensic anthropology from Western Carolina University in 2021. This is her first DPAA mission, and she is looking forward to gaining more experience in the field!
