Criminal Justice Institute Bringing Advanced Education and Training to Arkansas Law Enforcement.

The Criminal Justice Institute (CJI) is a campus of the University of Arkansas System that serves a unique population of non-traditional students—certified law enforcement professionals who are actively employed within our State’s police departments and sheriff’s offices. The Institute is committed to making communities safer by supporting law enforcement professionals through training, education, resources and collaborative partnerships. Utilizing both classroom-based instruction and practical, hands-on application, CJI provides an educational experience designed to enhance the performance and professionalism of law enforcement in progressive areas of criminal justice, including law enforcement leadership and management, crime scene investigation, computer applications, traffic safety, illicit drug investigations and school safety. The Criminal Justice Institute provides unparalleled support to the Arkansas law enforcement community by offering:

- Specialized Programs designed to enhance the job performance of law enforcement personnel

- Opportunities to complete Academic Certificates and Associate of Applied Science Degrees in Crime Scene Investigation and Law Enforcement Administration

- Online Programs that allow officers to complete courses at their own pace within their home, department, or community

In addition to serving Arkansas law enforcement, we provide law enforcement training programs to police officers and sheriff deputies outside of Arkansas for a small fee.

What better way to celebrate than by highlighting the students in our Crime Scene Technician Certificate Program.

We’re wrapping up the final week of this intensive 6-week program, where students have been building hands-on skills in crime scene processing, evidence collection, and documentation.

All of CJI’s staff headed to the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute on Wednesday to take part in a Pizza Challenge, a team-building exercise where teams battled it out to create the best pizza recipe and the most memorable marketing campaign.

As it turns out, building a great pizza has a lot in common with building a great team. Everyone brought different ideas, skills, and personalities to the table, and the best results came from working together. Along the way, we discovered who naturally steps up as a leader, who keeps the team organized, and who has some very strong opinions about pizza toppings.

It was a great day away from the office, but we were all eager to get back to what we do best and put those skills to work serving you.

CJI was proud to host the 2026 Impaired Driving Conference, bringing together Arkansas' Certified Drug Recognition Experts (DREs) and Certified Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) Instructors for two days of advanced training and collaboration.

The conference focused on evolving drug trends, toxicology, legal updates, and DRE standards, providing attendees with valuable information to help identify, investigate, and prosecute impaired driving offenses.

Arkansas currently has 83 certified Drug Recognition Experts serving communities across the state. These highly trained officers are available to assist agencies that need support with impaired driving investigations and evaluations.

With Arkansas law enforcement officers issuing 9,941 DWI citations last year, the need for highly trained officers remains critical. Events like this conference help ensure our officers stay current on the latest research, methods, and best practices to keep Arkansas roadways safe.

Thank you to everyone who attended and to the DREs who continue to serve as a valuable resource for agencies across our state!
