Commonwealth University-Lock Haven A small, public university located on the West Branch of the Susquehanna River in the scenic mountain Come Home to The Haven - Go Bald Eagles!

The Central State Normal School, was founded in 1870 and chartered to prepare teachers for the public schools. Subsequently, changes in its mission led to changes in name, to State Teachers College at Lock Haven (1926), to Lock Haven State College (1960), to Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania (1983) to Commonwealth University-Lock Haven (2022). Lock Haven is one of 14 institutions within Pennsy

lvania's State System of Higher Education (PASSHE). Not only has the mission and vision of Lock Haven expanded over the years, but also the physical environment and facilities have seen extensive changes. Due to increases in numbers of students, from approximately 600 in the 1940s to over 2,000 in 1970, and current enrollments at approximately 3,000 students, the campus has been modernized with the addition of many new buildings and residence halls.

From first-generation college student to veterinarian, business owner, and now scholarship donor — Dr. Karl Hartsock’s story is coming full circle. 🦅

A 1973 Lock Haven alumnus, Hartsock recently established the Dr. Karl R. Hartsock, VMD Scholarship to support incoming biology students at Commonwealth University-Lock Haven, helping future students pursue the same kind of opportunities that changed his own life.

His journey from Lock Haven classrooms to a 40-year career in veterinary medicine is a powerful reminder of how one opportunity can shape an entire future — and how giving back can do the same for the next generation.

The finish line is in sight, Bald Eagles! We are so excited to celebrate the Class of 2026 at Thomas Fieldhouse. Here is the essential information for graduates and their guests to ensure a great commencement weekend:

🗓️ Ceremony Schedule
Doors open one hour prior to each ceremony. Please note that ceremonies take place in a non-air-conditioned space, so we encourage guests to dress accordingly!

Graduate Degree Ceremony:

Friday, May 15, 2026, at 6:00 p.m.

Undergraduate Degree Ceremonies:

Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. – College of Health, Science and Technology & Zeigler College of Business.

Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. – College of Arts, Humanities, Education and Social Sciences.
