What happens when something that seems ordinary leads to consequences that last for decades? USU English professor and author Jennifer Sinor explores that question in her new novel, “The Beautiful Plain,” released Oct. 1 by the University of Nebraska Press. Sinor will discuss the novel on Utah Public Radio’s “Access Utah” at 9 a.m. Oct. 6. Read the story to learn more about Sinor’s newest work and her 26 years of teaching at USU.

Two USU School of Social Sciences faculty members are contributing their expertise to research priorities for future U.S. climate assessments. Jessica Schad and Stacia Ryder are co-authors of a commentary bringing together 175 researchers to identify research needs that can help communities, institutions and decision-makers understand and respond to evolving climate risks. Schad contributed expertise on rural communities, while Ryder focused on climate risks and resilience in the U.S. Southwest.

Two Utah State University undergraduate scholars are bringing Latinx art and community stories to downtown Logan. Photography major Kjrstine Landaverde and art history major Ella White curated and installed the Latinx Art Exhibition 2026 at ReadyMade Gallery, gaining hands-on experience in exhibition planning, installation, and curation. The exhibition runs through Oct. 3 and features works by local and regional artists representing a range of Latin American experiences in the United States.

Did you enjoy Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey"? Come take a deeper dive into the ancient epic through a semester-long book club and discussion series! The book club will meet throughout the fall semester and culminate in a community screening and discussion of Nolan's film adaptation.

Utah State University Sociology Professor Christy Glass is helping lead a new long-term study with the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health to examine the physical and mental health of elite women athletes. The Women in Sports (WINS) Study will work directly with athletes to explore topics including injury, reproductive health, mental health, and financial security. The study aims to help build a stronger body of research centered on women athletes’ experiences and well-being.

Utah State physicist Feng Pan is exploring how light could help overcome some of the challenges facing quantum computing. His nanophotonics research focuses on using light to interact with materials at the nanoscale and potentially connect quantum processor units. Pan, a new faculty member in USU’s Department of Physics, is also recruiting undergraduate and graduate students from physics, chemistry, engineering and other disciplines to join his research team and pursue national research opportunities.
