Entertainment Design and Production at Ohio Northern University Entertainment Design & Production at Ohio Northern University is a unique program focusing on the areas of theatrical design, production and stage management.

Our students earn a bachelor of fine arts in Theatre Design & Production (TD&P). Distinctive features

A unique international emphasis includes plentiful opportunities to work with international guest artists, touring and the bi-annual International Play F

Inspiring, challenging work with nationally and internationally acclaimed directors, actors, dancers, choreographers and designers (20 guests each year)
Double majors are encouraged and permitted across the University

Facilities
The Freed Center for the Performing Arts is a modern facility with the latest equipment, including:

A 550-seat proscenium theatre and 132-seat studio theatre
Dance/rehearsal room, scenic and costume shops, and academic and performance support spaces
“Smart” classrooms equipped with current instructional technology
State-of-the-art computer lab
Student organizations
Theta Alpha Phi – national theatre honorary

Professional placement
The TD&P program enjoys a very high rate of placement for its graduates seeking either employment or further education at the graduate level. ONU’s frequent hosting of guest artists enables many of its technical students to secure useful professional contacts, and sometimes employment, before graduating.

After two days of qualifying rounds our EDP team, The Bear Necessities, are in first place at the 2026 T3 (Theatre Technology Tournament).

Make sure to see The Glass Menagerie and MaKena's great design

Our Senior Capstone Exhibit is now on view in the Elzay Gallery of Art. All of our Bachelor of Arts and Fine Arts candidates in studio arts, art education, and graphic design have devoted a full semester to producing a thematically focused project as part of the required senior capstone experience. The capstone project is designed to encourage students to define the complex intersection between personal voice, conceptual understanding, the ability to conduct and use research, and to effectively use their liberal arts education in a process of creating a compelling, professional presentation.

MaKena Ellenberger, a BFA/studio arts and entertainment design and production, is exhibiting Scattered Memories. “I designed the theatrical set for ‘The Glass Menagerie’ by Tennessee Williams to be used in the ONU Freed Center for the Performing Arts this spring. The intention of my design is to focus on the themes of fragility, memory, disconnection, and desperation and how these affect the story as a whole and the individual characters. Every scenic decision has been picked to show the emotional disconnection between the family in a physical way.”

Our hearts and prayers go to the Shutt Family and the Kewpee Hamburgers Family as they lost their patriarch, Harry Shutt. His support of the arts and the community is a legacy which we have all felt. From the almost 30 year tradition of The ONU Holiday Spectacular giving thousands access to a premiere holiday musical r***e, to being awarded the Governor's Award for the Arts -- Mr. Shutt will always be remembered by the Ohio Northern University family. We salute you, Dear Sir!!
